Product Description
Sobekneferu Socks by Sophia Wiik
What Is Being Made
Sobekneferu socks are a pair of lace-patterned knitted socks designed by independent designer Sophia Wiik. These socks are sized for European shoe sizes 36 through 43, making them suitable for a wide range of foot sizes. The design features decorative lace elements integrated throughout the sock construction, combining functional hosiery with ornamental stitch patterns.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses knitting as both the primary craft and overall technique. The socks are worked using the Magic Loop method, a circular knitting technique that requires approximately 80 centimeters of cable length. This method allows knitters to work small circumferences in the round without requiring a full set of double-pointed needles, making it an efficient approach for sock construction.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Sobekneferu socks feature lace stitches as their defining stitch pattern element. The base fabric is worked in stockinette stitch (described in the pattern as "glatt rechts," meaning smooth knit in German), which provides a smooth, classic sock fabric. The lace pattern is integrated into this stockinette base, creating an openwork design that adds visual interest and texture to the finished socks.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn weight: 4-ply sock yarn (fingering weight)
- Yardage: Approximately 40 to 100 grams of main color yarn
- Contrast yarn: Approximately 5 grams of a contrasting color for accent details
- Recommended yarn: Regia Premium Bamboo or similar 4-ply sock yarn
- Needles: Approximately 2.5 millimeters (US size 1.5) circular needles with 80 centimeter cable length for Magic Loop method
Gauge and Sizing Information
The pattern specifies a gauge of 34 stitches and 44 rows per 10 centimeters worked in stockinette stitch on 2.5 millimeter needles. This gauge measurement is essential for achieving the correct finished sock size. The pattern emphasizes that individual knitting tension, yarn characteristics, and daily variation can all affect gauge, making a test swatch highly recommended before committing to the full project.
Difficulty Level
Sobekneferu socks are rated as intermediate difficulty. This classification reflects the combination of techniques required: circular knitting using the Magic Loop method, lace stitch pattern reading and execution, and the shaping involved in sock construction. Knitters should have foundational circular knitting skills and experience with lace patterns before attempting this design.
Design Credit
Sobekneferu is a STICHFEST design created by Sophia Wiik. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF for personal use only, with restrictions on selling either the pattern or finished items created from it.
