Product Description
The Stone gate scarf is my very first design. I thought of it when I was traveling and noticed a beautiful stone gate in front of someone's home. When I saw the Caron cotton cake in the same color as this gate, I had to recreate it. It had different shapes and textures and that is what I tried to design in this scarf. It's so beautiful and classic. It's beginner friendly and will easily become a favorite in your scarf collection. If you cannot find the exact colors I used, any size 4 (light weight 4) will work fine.
Thank you and Enjoy!

What Is Being Made
The Stone Gate Scarf is a beginner-friendly crochet scarf designed by Jackie Jones. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished scarf suitable for a range of skill levels, making it an accessible project for those new to crochet while offering visual interest through stitch variation and color work.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern incorporates several foundational crochet techniques that build essential skills. The design features stitch variations including half double crochet and double crochet stitches worked in different ways. Back loop only (BLO) construction is used to create texture and definition in specific sections. The pattern also demonstrates color work and yarn transitions, allowing crafters to practice managing multiple yarns and creating visual contrast within a single project.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – A fundamental stitch that creates a medium-height fabric
- Double Crochet (DC) – A taller stitch used for drape and structure
- Back Loop Only (BLO) – Working through only the back loop of stitches to create ridged texture
- Bean Stitch (BS) – A decorative stitch created by pulling up multiple loops on the hook and closing them together, then chaining one and skipping to the next stitch. This creates a bumpy, dimensional texture
- Cross Stitch (CS) – A stitch formed by skipping a stitch, working a double crochet into the following stitch, then returning to work into the skipped stitch, creating an interlocked appearance
Materials and Tools
The Stone Gate Scarf uses a combination of yarns to create its finished look. The primary yarn is Caron Cotton Cake in Silver Cloud, a #4 weight yarn (worsted weight), with one cake providing 530 yards—enough yardage with yarn remaining after project completion. The pattern also incorporates Sublime Baby Cashmere Merino Silk DK Prints in Shade 0588 (Lot 16288), a delicate DK weight yarn, with one ball of 50 grams containing 127 yards used for accent details.
The primary crochet hook is 4.5mm, with a 5.5mm hook used specifically for the starting chain to create a looser foundation edge. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, scissors, and an optional tassel maker or book for creating decorative tassels to finish the scarf ends.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, The Stone Gate Scarf is designed to be accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The pattern teaches fundamental stitches and techniques while remaining manageable in scope and complexity, making it an ideal choice for skill-building.
