Product Description

This shawl collar cardigan with graphic colorwork is sized for tweens, teens, and adults. Knit with bulky yarn, it looks much more complicated than it is. The patterning is done with mosaic knitting, so only one strand of yarn is used at a time. The body and sleeves are both worked flat to the armholes, at which point they're joined and the raglan yoke decreases are done seamlessly. Stitches are picked up along the front edges and neck opening for the ribbed edging and shawl collar. There are no closures other than an optional belt.

The sample sweater is 40" and worn with about 5" of ease.

Finished sizes (closed) 26 (30½, 35½, 40, 44½, 49½)” [66 (77.5, 90, 101.5, 113, 125.5)cm] require 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) skeins of the main color of Cascade Ecological Wool and 1 skein of the contrast color.

Tioga Cardigan by Stephanie Klose

What is Being Made

Tioga is an advanced-level knitted cardigan designed by Stephanie Klose. This garment is available in six finished sizes ranging from 26 inches to 49½ inches (66 to 125.5 centimeters) closed, making it suitable for a wide range of body measurements. The cardigan features color work and a sophisticated construction method that combines seamless and seamed techniques.

Construction Techniques

The Tioga cardigan employs a multi-stage construction approach that showcases advanced knitting skills. The sweater body is constructed in one piece from the bottom up, allowing for seamless integration of the main garment sections. Sleeves are knit flat and then joined at the yoke, which is continued seamlessly for a polished finish. After the main body and yoke are complete, the sleeves are seamed. The front ribbing is picked up and worked after the sweater body is finished, and the collar is knit using short rows to create a refined neckline.

Stitches and Color Work

The primary stitch used throughout most of the garment is stockinette stitch. Color work is executed using mosaic knitting, a technique that creates intricate patterned effects while working with one strand of yarn at a time. This method allows for complex visual designs without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork, making it an elegant choice for advanced knitters seeking sophisticated results.

Materials

Yarn: Cascade Ecological Wool, 100% wool composition. Each skein contains 8.75 ounces (250 grams) and 478 yards (437 meters). The pattern calls for Cream (A) in quantities of 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, or 4 skeins depending on size, and Black (B) requiring 1 skein for all sizes.

Needles and Notions: Size 7 (4.5mm) and Size 9 (5.5mm) circular needles, each 29 inches (74 centimeters) or longer, are required. Additional supplies include stitch markers, stitch holders or scrap yarn for holding stitches, and a blunt, large-eyed needle for finishing.

Gauge

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 17 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles (Size 9). Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
