Treola Cowl by Brixton Purl
What is Being Made
The Treola Cowl is a versatile knitted accessory designed by Therese Hedlund and created to coordinate with the Treola Hat. This cowl measures 31 cm across and 27 cm tall, offering flexible styling options for cold weather wear. The design can be worn at full length for a traditional cowl drape or folded double to create a mock turtleneck effect, providing both warmth and style on winter days.
Construction Method
The Treola Cowl is knitted flat, meaning it is worked on straight needles rather than in the round. This construction approach makes the project accessible while still delivering professional results. The finished pieces are then sewn together to create the complete cowl. The pattern comes in one standard size; however, knitters can customize the circumference by adding or subtracting multiples of 6 stitches and following the pattern as written, making it adaptable to different preferences.
Techniques and Stitches
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that features colorwork as its primary design element. The colorwork pattern is specifically noted as being beginner-friendly for those new to working with multiple colors, making it an excellent introduction to stranded colorwork techniques without overwhelming complexity. The pattern uses a charted design system, and detailed tutorials on reading charts and seaming techniques are available to support knitters through the construction process.
Yarn and Materials
The Treola Cowl requires DK weight yarn totaling approximately 125–135 meters per 50 grams in either wool or acrylic blend compositions. The pattern calls for four distinct yarn colors:
- Yarn A: 84 m of Rowan Alpaca Soft DK in shade 211 Charcoal
- Yarn B: 50 m of Rowan Alpaca Soft DK in shade 201 Simply White
- Yarn C: 50 m of Rowan Alpaca Soft DK in shade 216 Simply Black
- Yarn D: 84 m of Rowan Alpaca Soft DK in shade 210 Rainy Day
Needles and Gauge
This project requires two sizes of 3.5mm and 4mm straight needles, allowing for gauge control and stitch definition. The working tension is 24 stitches and 23 rows per 10 centimeters, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements and ensuring proper fit when worn.
