Virgo Wrap by Tegan Shepherdson
What You'll Make
The Virgo Wrap is a beginner-friendly crochet scarf designed by independent designer Tegan Shepherdson. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished wrap measuring 120 centimeters in length and 25 centimeters in width, making it an ideal accessory for layering or draping. The wrap is named after the zodiac sign Virgo, embodying qualities of loyalty, analytical thinking, kindness, hard work, and practicality that the designer attributes to this finished piece.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 200 grams (400 meters) of DK weight yarn (also known as 8 Ply). The pattern specifically recommends Bendigo Woollen Mills 8 Ply yarn
- Hook: 4mm crochet hook
- Notions: Scissors and threading needle for finishing
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This beginner-level pattern uses fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible to newer crafters. The primary stitch structure is the V-Stitch, which creates an open, lacy texture throughout the wrap. The V-Stitch is formed by working a double crochet, chain two, and another double crochet into the same stitch or chain space, creating a distinctive V-shaped motif.
Additional stitches used in the Virgo Wrap include:
- Chain (CH): The foundation stitch used to create the initial base of 62 chains plus 3 turning chains
- Double Crochet (DC): The primary stitch worked into chain spaces to build the V-Stitch pattern
- Single Crochet (SC): Available for variations or finishing techniques
- Chain Space (CH SP): The two-chain gaps between double crochets that form the openwork design
- Skip Stitch (SK ST): Used to create spacing and shaping within the pattern structure
Pattern Construction
The wrap begins with a foundation chain of 62 stitches plus 3 turning chains. The first row establishes the V-Stitch pattern by working a double crochet into the 6th bump from the hook, followed by a chain 2 and another double crochet into the same stitch. This V-Stitch is then repeated across the row with 3-stitch skips between each motif, creating 15 V-Stitches per completed row. Subsequent rows maintain this V-Stitch pattern by working into the chain-2 spaces of the previous row, ensuring consistent stitch count and creating the characteristic openwork texture.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 6 V-Stitches across by 9.5 rows equaling 10 centimeters when worked with the recommended DK weight yarn and 4mm hook. This gauge measurement helps ensure the wrap achieves its intended finished dimensions of 120 centimeters long by 25 centimeters wide.
Finishing Options
The pattern suggests embellishing the completed wrap with fringe or tassels for an enhanced finished appearance, allowing crafters to customize the look of their wrap while adding decorative detail to the edges.
