Product Description
Worth Every Penny is a hexagonal, TITR (Tunisian in the round) baby blanket suitable for competent Tunisian crochet beginners. TITR is the best method for colour work and graphics with no yarn carries or stranding and an absolute game changer. The pattern includes complete instructions and phototutorial on how to start and finish this Tunisian in the round project. It is my first "Stitch it Your Way, One Pattern, Infinite Possibilities" design. Options include a design with sheep and/or elephant graphics and a selection of "alternate endings" ."Endings" include complete charts for circling the blanket with the letters of the alphabet, using elephants and/or sheep in each corner. You will learn how start a TITR hexagon, read colour coded stitch charts (trust me, much easier than following round by round written instructions). I have included many hints on how to avoid yarn tangles, fix mistakes (it happens) and will guide you to success.
Worth Every Penny Tunisian in the Round Hexagon Baby Blanket
What is Being Made
Worth Every Penny is a hexagon-shaped baby blanket designed by Sandy Walker featuring customizable graphic sections. The blanket begins with a center hearts motif, followed by three additional graphic sections that can showcase sheep, elephants, or a combination of both animals. These graphic sections are separated by solid color sections, allowing crafters to personalize the design based on their preferences. The modular design philosophy—"Stitch it Your Way, One Pattern, Infinite Possibilities"—enables makers to create unique colorwork combinations while working from a single pattern.
Techniques Used
Tunisian in the Round (TITR) is the primary technique used throughout this project. According to the designer Sandy Walker, TITR is superior for achieving colorwork, graphics, and lettering effects without the complications of traditional stranded colorwork. The technique eliminates yarn carries and stranding on the reverse side, instead using specific stitches to create the desired visual effects on the front of the work.
The colorwork graphics are achieved through strategic use of two key Tunisian stitches: Tunisian knit stitch displays the forward pass color on the front of the work, while Tunisian reverse stitch pulls the return pass color to the front, creating the graphic designs. In the pattern examples, cream-colored reverse stitches are used to pull the secondary color forward and form the sheep, elephants, and heart motifs.
Stitches Used
- Tunisian knit stitch
- Tunisian reverse stitch
Materials
This project uses DK weight yarn, which provides appropriate stitch definition for the detailed colorwork and graphic sections. The pattern is worked in the round using a crochet hook appropriate for DK yarn, allowing the hexagon shape to develop from the center outward.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. The Tunisian in the Round method and colorwork execution require understanding of Tunisian crochet fundamentals and the ability to follow graphic charts, making it an excellent project for expanding technical skills.
Designer and Format
This pattern was created by independent designer Sandy Walker of Walker Hollow Designs in February 2020. The project is available as a downloadable PDF, providing convenient access to the complete pattern instructions and graphic sections for both sheep and elephant variations.
