Product Description
Happy year of the rat my friends! The lunar calendar has come full circle and the year of the rat is the 1st to win the zodiac race. If you would like to learn more about the Zodiac Race and the Chinese Lunar Zodiac, please have a look at Youtube. There are so many wonderful videos to watch and learn.
Here I have made a small amigurumi for you to enjoy. I made these two for my son and his cousin for our festive Lunar New Year.
If you are using Paintbox Cotton Aran, you will need just 1 ball of each colour. The gold can be scrap yarn, you could also use scrap black yarn to make the nose and eyes.

What Is Being Made
The Year of the Rat is a crocheted amigurumi toy celebrating the Chinese Lunar Zodiac. This small stuffed figure measures approximately 16 centimeters from head to toe and commemorates the Year of the Rat, the first animal in the zodiac race. The design is ideal for festive Lunar New Year celebrations and makes a charming handmade gift or decorative piece.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the crochet technique to construct a three-dimensional amigurumi toy. Amigurumi is a Japanese craft method of crocheting small, stuffed figures by working in continuous rounds to create compact, sculptural forms. The Year of the Rat pattern is classified as intermediate to advanced difficulty, indicating that crafters should have foundational crochet knowledge before beginning this project.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern documentation provided, amigurumi construction typically employs fundamental crochet stitches worked in tight, continuous spirals. The head and body sections are crocheted separately and then assembled to create the complete rat figure.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Year of the Rat pattern calls for aran weight yarn in multiple colorways. Crafters need only partial quantities of each color, making this an economical project for using yarn scraps or stash yarn. Standard crochet hooks appropriate for aran weight yarn are required, though the specific hook size is referenced within the full pattern documentation. Stuffing material is needed to fill the crocheted head and body sections to create the finished amigurumi form.
Pattern Format
This design is available as a free downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer anniegurumi, making it accessible for crocheters of all budgets who wish to craft their own zodiac-themed amigurumi.
