Aequus Nox Knitting Pattern by Rebecca Hill
Project Overview
Aequus Nox is an advanced fingering weight cabled and lace scarf designed by Rebecca Hill. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a lightweight accessory suitable for transitional seasons, carrying you from crisp autumn winds into fresh spring breezes. The scarf's delicate construction combines cable and lace techniques to produce an elegant, versatile piece that works across multiple seasons.
What Is Being Made
A fingering weight scarf measuring 8 inches wide and 48 inches long in its standard finished dimensions. The pattern allows for customization—knitters can extend the length by continuing to knit to their desired measurements, or they can select yarns with greater elasticity and employ aggressive blocking techniques to achieve additional length and drape.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This advanced pattern incorporates several sophisticated knitting techniques:
- Cable work: Cable 4 back (C4B) creates textured, twisted columns throughout the design
- Lace elements: Yarn overs (YO) combined with decreases form openwork sections
- Decrease variations: Slip, slip, knit (SSK) and knit two together (K2TOG) for right-leaning decreases, plus purl two together through the back loop (P2TOGTBL) for left-leaning decreases
- Specialty stitches: Knit one through the back loop (K1TBL) for twisted stitch definition
The combination of cables and lace creates visual interest while maintaining the lightweight quality essential to a fingering weight scarf.
Materials Required
Yarn: 440 yards of fingering weight yarn. The sample uses Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in the colorway Alizarin. For scarves longer than the standard 48 inches, yarns with greater elasticity such as Dream in Color Smooshy are recommended, paired with aggressive blocking for enhanced length and drape.
Needles and Tools: Size US 3 straight needles, a cable needle for managing cable stitches, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with cable techniques, lace construction, and reading complex stitch abbreviations and charts.
