Beach Chair Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level crochet pattern for creating a miniature beach chair. The design produces a functional decorative piece available in two finished sizes depending on yarn weight selection. The pattern uses a downloadable PDF format with accompanying video tutorial support.
What Is Being Made
A small-scale beach chair suitable for display, dollhouse use, or decorative purposes. The finished chair features a seat component worked in contrasting colors to create visual interest and definition. The chair is constructed through crochet techniques and assembled using sewing methods.
Finished Sizes
- Large version: 14cm x 10cm (5.5" x 4") when made with 8 ply wool
- Medium version: 11.5cm x 7cm (4.5" x 2.75") when made with 4 ply crochet cotton
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary stitches used include:
- Chain stitch (ch): Used to establish the foundation of the seat, with 27 chains cast on for the base structure
- Half double crochet (hdc): The main stitch used throughout the seat rows, worked in continuous rows to build height and structure
- Single crochet (sc): A fundamental stitch available in the pattern vocabulary for construction details
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining and finishing techniques
The pattern demonstrates color work techniques by introducing a contrast color for the seat section while maintaining the main color for other components. This involves carrying yarn, dropping colors between rows, and picking up new colors strategically to create the two-tone effect without cutting yarn unnecessarily.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for specific materials to complete the beach chair project:
- Yarn: Three colors of 4 ply crochet cotton (or 8 ply wool for the larger version). The designer used cotton yarn in the original sample
- Crochet hook: 1.25mm hook for the 4 ply cotton version; appropriate sizing adjustments needed for 8 ply wool
- Finishing supplies: Scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in loose ends, sewing thread, and a sewing needle for assembling the chair components together
Pattern Structure
The seat section forms the foundation of the design. It begins with a chain foundation of 27 stitches, then progresses through multiple rows of half double crochet. The pattern incorporates color changes between rows, with the main color and a contrast seat color alternating to create definition. Rows are worked without fastening off between color changes, allowing the crafter to bring the previous color up to the next row for seamless transitions.
Skill Level
Classified as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and techniques. Crafters should be comfortable with reading pattern abbreviations, managing multiple yarn colors, and understanding row-by-row construction. The assembly phase requires basic sewing skills to join completed crochet sections.
