Product Description

These fingerless gloves feature a fitted thumb gusset, and Estonian lace patterns. Inspired by waves that spread across a pond or even an ocean, they take their name from Capillary waves, or ripples. The cuff has lace patterning all around.

Seven Fingerless Mittens I have recently become addicted to knitting fingerless mittens, because they are such a wonderful garment for exploring textures and colours - small enough to take anywhere, and the finished object can be worn and admired easily (unlike socks, which tend to hide in shoes).

All the fingerless mittens/gloves are knit with fingering weight yarn. Unless otherwise specified, semi-solid and solid colours will yield the best result. Highly variegated yarns tend to obscure the pattern.

The patterns will be released as they are ready throughout 2011, and you will receive an email notice each time an update is available. Please click on the link and download the latest version of the ebook. Each update will include al

Capillary Fingerless Gloves by Anna Dalvi

What Is Being Made

Capillary is a pair of fingerless gloves designed by Anna Dalvi featuring a fitted thumb gusset and intricate Estonian lace patterns. Inspired by capillary waves—the small ripples that spread across water surfaces—these gloves showcase delicate lace patterning around the entire cuff. The design is available in two women's sizes: Medium (hand circumference 7.5"-8.0") and Small (hand circumference 6.5").

Techniques and Construction

This advanced knitting project employs several sophisticated techniques to create its elegant finished piece. The construction begins with a cabled cast-on using two strands of yarn, which provides a sturdy, elastic foundation. After casting on, one strand is cut and fastened off, allowing the knitter to continue with a single strand. The gloves are knit in the round, requiring careful attention to avoid twisting during the join. The fitted thumb gusset is a key structural element that ensures proper shaping and comfort around the thumb area. The Estonian lace patterns form the visual centerpiece, wrapping completely around the cuff with delicate, openwork designs that create the wave-inspired aesthetic.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern utilizes Estonian lace as its primary stitch pattern, which is characteristic of traditional Baltic knitting. This lace work is charted and worked in the round, requiring the knitter to read and follow detailed stitch charts. The pattern includes a Cuff Chart that is repeated to create the full circumference of the cuff. The lace patterns involve yarn overs and decreases that create the openwork ripple effects reminiscent of water movement.
