Product Description
Clara the Cat has a pretty summer outfit for a day at the beach. Worked mostly in stockinette with increases and decreases for shaping, this pattern includes the cat, skirt, sweater and underwear. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, this toy is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include long tail cast on, backward loop cast on, casting off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Clara the Cat Knitting Pattern
About This Design
Clara the Cat is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Amanda Berry for creating an adorable stuffed toy cat with interchangeable outfits. This downloadable PDF pattern allows crafters to knit a complete cat toy along with multiple clothing pieces, making it a versatile project for those with some knitting experience.
What You'll Create
This pattern produces a soft, cuddly cat toy with the ability to dress Clara in different outfits. The design includes the cat body itself plus coordinating garments, offering creative flexibility for customization and play. The finished toy is suitable for display, gifting, or as a cherished handmade companion.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate knitting project employs fundamental toy-making techniques including shaping through increases and decreases to form the cat's body and features. Crafters will practice seaming pieces together to construct a three-dimensional toy, a key skill in amigurumi and stuffed toy creation. The pattern also incorporates embroidery work for fine details, adding character and expression to the finished cat.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, the project uses standard knitting stitches appropriate for DK weight yarn on small needles. The construction method involves knitting individual pieces that are then seamed together with a darning needle, a traditional approach to toy making that creates sturdy, long-lasting results.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: Clara the Cat is knitted using 100% acrylic DK yarn (double knitting weight, also known as light worsted or 8 ply). The pattern requires approximately 30g each of four yarn shades: Grey, White, Blue, and Coral Pink. Recommended yarn brands include Stylecraft Special DK and Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, both reliable 100% acrylic DK options suitable for toy projects.
Needles: A pair of 3mm (US size 2.5) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm is required. These smaller needles create the tight gauge necessary for stuffed toys, preventing filling from showing through the fabric.
Additional Notions: Essential materials include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming pieces together, a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, toy filling (several large handfuls) to stuff the cat body, two 7mm toy cat safety eyes for secure eye attachment, and approximately one metre of Pale Pink DK yarn for embroidering facial details and finishing touches.
