Product Description
This hat was designed for my future sister in law, Lucy. Lucy is a neuroscientist who works with crayfish, and to be honest I don’t really understand much about what she does, except that somehow crayfish are very good at showing how brains work. There weren’t any patterns that looked much like crayfish in any of my stitch dictionaries (at least not any I liked!)
The lace pattern on this hat is vaguely reminiscent of crayfish claws, without being too obvious, so I thought it would be a good choice. She would know I was thinking about her when designing the hat, but to anyone else it would simply look like a nice stitch pattern.
This pattern is fully written and charted.
Crayfish Claws Knit Hat by Helen Cosgrove-Davies
What Is Being Made
Crayfish Claws is a knitted hat designed by Helen Cosgrove-Davies, created as a personalized gift inspired by the designer's sister-in-law Lucy, a neuroscientist who works with crayfish in brain research. The hat features a lace pattern that subtly evokes the appearance of crayfish claws, making it a meaningful accessory for someone with a professional connection to these creatures while remaining an elegant, understated design to the general observer.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked in the round, combining classic hat construction methods with decorative lace patterning. The hat begins with a cast-on of 108 stitches worked in the round, carefully joined without twisting to ensure a seamless construction. The design incorporates strategic increases to shape the crown and establish proper fit, with increases distributed evenly around the circumference using the kfb (knit front and back) technique to add stitches at regular intervals.
The construction follows a traditional hat structure beginning with ribbed edging to create stretch and definition at the brim, followed by the main body pattern featuring the signature lace design. The lace pattern is the focal point of the design, deliberately chosen to reference crayfish claws in an abstract way that requires design knowledge to fully appreciate.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) for foundational fabric
- Knit front and back (kfb) for increases
- Ribbing for the brim section
- Lace pattern stitches for the main body
Materials
This hat is worked in sport weight yarn on appropriate needles for the gauge required by the pattern. Sport weight yarn provides a lightweight, drapeable fabric suitable for a hat that will be comfortable to wear while maintaining good stitch definition for the lace pattern details.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to tackle lace patterning and in-the-round construction. The combination of ribbing, increases, and decorative lace work requires attention to stitch counts and pattern repeats, making it appropriate for knitters beyond the beginner stage.
