Product Description
Crosses is a square motif designed for the 2018 Friends Around the World CAL. It has texture and works well in one or more colours - the samples shown each use 2 colours.
Crosses also works well with Noughts!
It was designed for aran weight yarn but any weight could be used. Using a 5mm hook, the finished size is 30cm/12” square but it is a flexible design where you can add or remove rounds to get the size you want.
A sample was made in DK yarn, a 4mm hook was used for this square and the resultant size was 25cm/10” square.
Crosses Square by Agrarian Artisan
What Is Being Made
The Crosses Square is a modular crochet design that creates a larger decorative square through the assembly of four smaller squares. This project is ideal for crafters looking to build a textured, geometric piece that can be worked in a single color or multiple colors for added visual interest. The design showcases the versatility of modular crochet construction, where individual components are joined during the working process rather than assembled afterward.
Construction Method
This crochet pattern employs a join-as-you-go technique, eliminating the need for traditional sewing to assemble the finished squares. Each of the four smaller squares is crocheted individually and then joined to adjacent squares using slip stitches into designated spaces. Once all four squares are connected, a border is worked around the entire piece. The border can be repeated for additional rounds to achieve your desired finished size, making this pattern adaptable to various project dimensions.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used
- Slip stitch (ss) – Used for joining squares together as you go and for finishing edges
- Chain (ch) – Foundation stitch for building the base of each square
- Double crochet (dc) – Primary stitch creating the body and texture of the squares (UK terminology)
- Half treble (htr) – Secondary stitch used to add dimensional texture
- Treble (tr) – Stitch used for creating height and openwork elements
The pattern includes a chart for the small square, providing a visual reference alongside written instructions. Instructions are presented in UK crochet terminology with US equivalents provided for international crafters.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This project is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and allows the textured pattern to display clearly. You will need a crochet hook appropriate for aran weight yarn. The modular nature of the design means yarn quantity can be adjusted based on how many border rounds you choose to work.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with basic stitches and following charts. The join-as-you-go technique requires attention to detail but eliminates post-project finishing work, making it an efficient choice for crafters seeking to minimize assembly steps.
Design Details
The textured construction of the Crosses Square makes it visually interesting whether worked in a single solid color or in multiple colors for contrast. The geometric nature of the design and its modular construction method make it suitable for various applications, from decorative wall hangings to blanket squares in larger projects.
