Product Description
This is a pattern for a very “long wingspan” crescent shaped shawlette. The bottom is enhanced by a lovely lace stitch that adds a wonderfully feminine finish to this piece. The shawlette measures 88 inches at the widest points across the top and is 16 inches deep at the deepest point. It is made with 1 - 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn on a size #6 (U.S.)/4.0mm needle. I have shown it in the pictures in just a couple of the many ways that it can be worn.
Skill Level: Beginner + - Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of lace knitting).
The pattern is both charted and written out line by line.
Any heavy fingering weight or sport weight yarn will work for this pattern.
Easy Loch Katrine Shawlette by Linda Lehman
What is Being Made
The Easy Loch Katrine Shawlette is a long, shallow wrap-style shawl designed for versatile everyday wear. This elaborately edged shallow shawl measures approximately 85½ inches by 15½ inches at the deepest point of the edging, making it a generous accessory that can be styled in multiple ways. The finished piece is described as highly versatile in terms of wearing options, functioning as both a practical and decorative wardrobe addition.
Construction and Techniques
This shawlette features an unusual construction method that involves attaching a Shetland Edging, a traditional technique that creates the elaborate decorative border characteristic of this design. Despite the intricate appearance, the construction is not difficult for knitters with solid foundational skills. The pattern is classified as a fairly quick knit, making it an accessible project for intermediate-level crafters who have a good working knowledge of basic knitting techniques.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The primary stitch pattern used in this shawlette is stockinette stitch, which forms the base fabric of the wrap. The pattern incorporates yarn overs as a key stitch element, contributing to the lacy, decorative qualities of the finished piece. Knitting and purling form the foundation of the stitch work throughout the project.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: 850 to 1000 yards of heavy fingering weight yarn in sport weight classification
- Needles: Size #6 U.S. circular needle (4.00mm) with a cable length of at least 32 inches
- Additional Tools: Darning needle for weaving in ends
- Gauge: Approximately 4½ stitches to the inch and 7 rows to the inch when wet blocked in stockinette stitch (note that exact gauge is not critically important, though variations will affect final sizing and yarn requirements)
Skill Level and Requirements
This pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters who possess a solid working knowledge of fundamental knitting techniques including knitting, purling, and yarn overs. Familiarity with Shetland Edging attachment methods is beneficial, though the pattern is designed to be manageable for those with this intermediate skill set.
