Echo Finger Gloves by NOSTOdesign
What is Being Made
Echo Finger Gloves are a pair of symmetrical knitted hand coverings designed to fit multiple sizes. Created with kind permission of Woolly Wormhead, these gloves follow the original pattern concept from the Echo Hat found in the Imperceptions collection. Both gloves are identical with no distinction made between left and right, making them versatile and straightforward to construct.
Available Sizes
The pattern is offered in three sizes:
- Size M: hand circumference 17–18 cm (6.5–7 inches)
- Size L: hand circumference 19–20 cm (7.5–8 inches)
- Size XL: hand circumference 21–23 cm (8.5–9 inches)
Size XL is knitted using the same techniques as size L but with larger needles to achieve the correct gauge and fit.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Echo Finger Gloves are an intermediate-level knitting project that incorporates a variety of fundamental and advanced techniques:
- Alternate cable cast-on: Creates a sturdy, elastic foundation suitable for fitted garments
- Knit and purl stitches: Form the basic fabric structure
- Increases and decreases: Shape the gloves to fit the hand contours
- Stranded knitting: A colorwork technique that creates patterns using two or more colors within a single row
- Trapping long floats: A method used in stranded knitting to secure loose yarn strands on the inside of the fabric, preventing snags and ensuring durability
- Lateral braid: An additional textural or structural element incorporated into the design
Construction Method
The gloves are worked in the round using either double-pointed needles (DPNs) or circular needles with the magic loop method. This construction approach creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for fitted hand garments.
Yarn and Materials
Echo Finger Gloves are designed for light sport or fingering weight yarn, which falls into the 4-ply category. The sample shown in size L was knitted using Malabrigo Arroyo (100% wool superwash, 100 g = 306 m / 335 yd) in two colors: Sunset (A) and Chircas (B). The superwash treatment makes these gloves easy to care for and suitable for regular wear.
Pattern Format and Instructions
The downloadable PDF pattern includes both written and charted instructions, accommodating different learning preferences. Page 13 contains auxiliary stitch and round-counting schemes to assist knitters in maintaining accuracy throughout the project. This comprehensive approach helps ensure proper pattern alignment and gauge consistency, particularly important when working with stranded colorwork techniques.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, Echo Finger Gloves require comfortable familiarity with circular knitting, basic shaping techniques, and colorwork methods. Knitters should be confident with their gauge and comfortable reading both written and charted patterns before beginning this project.
