Product Description
I'm excited to release a new collection of patterns celebrating the magic of Christmas. This is the first of three!
This hooded cloak was designed to fit my Forest Gnome pattern. However, it has a wrap-around front so it can be worn by dolls of varying sizes by simply adjusting the length of the garment and sleeves.
The PDF does not include the pattern for the gnome doll. It does include patterns for:
Cloak
Garland for FC's head
Tiny Dolly
Tiny Bugle
Tiny Drum
Father Christmas's Cloak by Sara Elizabeth Kellner
Project Overview
This is a knitted cloak designed for dolls, created by independent designer Sara Elizabeth Kellner. The project combines a main cloak garment with optional decorative accessories including a garland and tiny toys, making it a complete festive ensemble for doll dressing.
What Is Being Made
The primary project is Father Christmas's Cloak, a knitted garment sized for dolls. The pattern also includes instructions for creating a garland and tiny toys to accompany the cloak, allowing crafters to build a complete holiday-themed doll accessory collection.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:
- Cast-on methods to establish stitches on the needles
- Increase techniques including make 1 stitches (M1, M1L, M1R) and knit-front-and-back (Kfb) increases for shaping
- Decrease techniques such as knit two together (K2tog) and slip-slip-knit (SSK) for tapering and shaping the garment
- Stitch marker placement to track pattern repeats and construction sections
- Double-pointed needle work for small circumference knitting, particularly useful for the garland and toy components
- Seaming and finishing using a darning needle to join pieces and weave in ends
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches appropriate for intermediate crafters:
- Knit (K) stitch as the foundation stitch
- Purl (P) stitch for textural variation
- Make 1 (M1) increases, including directional variations (M1L and M1R) for invisible shaping
- Knit-front-and-back (Kfb) for additional increase options
- Knit two together (K2tog) for right-leaning decreases
- Slip-slip-knit (SSK) for left-leaning decreases
Materials and Tools
For the Cloak: The main garment requires 100 yards of worsted weight yarn, with the designer recommending Juniper Moon Farm Stargazer Brushed. The yarn is divided into two colors: 20 yards for Color A (trim) and 100 yards for Color B (cloak body). Construction uses US Size 5 straight needles for flat knitting and US Size 5 double-pointed needles for small circumference sections. Additional supplies include 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and a darning needle for finishing.
For the Garland and Tiny Toys: These optional accessories are made from scrap yarn in various weights, primarily DK weight though other weights are suitable. Construction uses smaller US Size 1 double-pointed needles, a darning needle, and small amounts of stuffing or yarn scraps for filling the toys.
Yarn Weight Specifications
The primary cloak is designed for worsted, heavy worsted, and aran weight yarns, providing structure and drape appropriate for a doll-sized garment. The recommended yarn, Juniper Moon Farm Stargazer Brushed, offers a soft, brushed finish that enhances the festive appearance of the cloak.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with shaping techniques, multiple needles, and pattern instructions using standard abbreviations.
