Product Description
#fauxcablesocks
[EN] These socks feature a wide cable that is worked without twisting the stitches. You only need knits, purls, yarn overs and decreases. This makes for a stretchier fabric than with real cables and those socks will fits comfortably in shoes. Chart reading required.
To avoid running out of yarn for larger sizes especially with longer foot length, make sure to have more than 100g of yarn available.
Faux Cable Socks by Stefanie Bold
What is Being Made
Faux Cable Socks are a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Stefanie Bold that creates comfortable, wearable socks featuring a distinctive wide cable motif. The pattern offers six different sizes (A through F) based on foot circumference rather than length alone, accommodating feet ranging from 18.3 cm to 24.8 cm (7¼ to 9¾ inches) around the ball of the foot. Each sock is knit to the wearer's specific foot length measurement, ensuring a personalized fit.
Techniques Used
The defining characteristic of these socks is the faux cable technique, which creates the appearance of a traditional cable without the complexity of twisting stitches. This innovative approach makes the pattern accessible to beginner knitters while still delivering visual impact. The faux cable method produces a stretchier fabric than genuine twisted cables, allowing the finished socks to flex and move comfortably within shoes without binding or restricting circulation.
The pattern requires chart reading skills, as the cable design is presented in chart format for clear visual guidance. Knitters will work in the round, a standard construction method for socks that eliminates the need for seaming.
Stitches Used
The Faux Cable Socks pattern utilizes only fundamental knitting stitches, making it ideal for knitters developing their skills:
- Knit stitches – the foundation of stockinette stitch and the cable pattern
- Purl stitches – used to create texture and definition within the cable design
- Yarn overs – create decorative openings and contribute to the faux cable effect
- Decreases – balance the yarn overs and shape the sock structure
Materials and Specifications
These socks are designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides durability and warmth suitable for everyday wear. The recommended gauge is 34 stitches and 50 rounds over 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch, which should be verified before beginning to ensure proper fit.
The pattern is classified as beginner difficulty, though chart reading experience is beneficial. Stitch counts vary by size, ranging from 56 stitches for size A up to 76 stitches for size F. The socks are designed with 10% negative ease, meaning they are intentionally slightly smaller than the foot measurement to ensure they stay securely in place during wear.
This downloadable PDF pattern was last revised on October 23, 2019, and is the work of independent designer Stefanie Bold, who can be found on Ravelry as stebo79 and on Instagram as @stefaniebold.
