Floppy Scrubby Dishcloth by Rhelena
What is Being Made
The Floppy Scrubby Dishcloth is a crocheted kitchen utility cloth designed by Helena Reimer (Rhelena of CrochetnCrafts). This dishcloth features a flexible, floppy construction that makes it ideal for washing dishes and cleaning kitchen surfaces. The pattern offers versatility with an optional scrubbie attachment, allowing crafters to create either a standard dishcloth or an enhanced version with textured scrubbing capability integrated into the design.
Techniques and Construction
The dishcloth is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques worked in continuous rounds from a center starting point. The pattern begins with a magic circle, a popular method for creating seamless circular projects. Stitches are joined at the end of each round using slip stitches, creating a structured, flat circular shape. The design incorporates strategic increases throughout the rounds to create the characteristic floppy, dimensional texture that gives this dishcloth its name and functional appeal.
The optional scrubbie attachment is integrated at Round 5 of the pattern, with two separate round instructions provided to accommodate both the scrubbie and non-scrubbie versions. This design choice allows crafters to customize their finished project based on personal preference and intended use.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (sc) – Used in Rounds 1 and 3 for creating a tighter, more defined fabric
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – Featured in Rounds 2 and 4 for a slightly more open, flexible texture
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between stitches
- Chain Stitch (ch) – Used at the beginning of each round to prepare for the following stitch pattern
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Bernat Handicrafter Cotton in Worsted Weight (also labeled as #4 weight), 100% cotton fiber. The pattern calls for one ball in White, which provides 1.75 oz/50g and approximately 80 yards/73 meters of yardage. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for dishcloths due to its absorbency, durability, and washability.
Crochet Hook: H/8 size (5.00mm) hook, appropriately matched to the worsted weight yarn for proper gauge and fabric consistency.
Additional Supplies: A measuring tape for checking dimensions, scissors for cutting yarn, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a 3.5-inch scrubbie (if making the scrubbie version of the pattern).
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as Intermediate difficulty. While the stitches used are fundamental crochet techniques, the pattern requires comfort with reading crochet instructions, understanding stitch abbreviations, working in the round, and managing increases to shape the fabric. The optional scrubbie variation adds a customization element that provides crafters with design flexibility.
