Product Description
The stitch pattern used for the body of this scarf reminds me of a forest of trees, their branches forming high, mysterious arches. The shape of the arches are gothic in nature and that, plus the muted yet rich tones of the beautiful cashmere from Sericin Silkworks, led to the name for this decadent scarf. This project uses up every yard of the precious, luxury fiber.
The scarf is worked from the bottom up in two pieces that are then grafted at the centre back of the neck. This construction ensures that the arches of the lace pattern point upward on both sides of scarf. With buttonholes on one end, you can button this scarf in numerous ways to hold it in place around your neck.
Pattern contains both written and charted instructions.
Yarn: 375 yards/343 meters of 2 ply 100% cashmere or cashmere blend, heavy lace weight/light fingering yarn that knits up to 7 sts/inch.
Skill Required • Lace • Kitchener stitch/grafting • Increasing and decreasing • Following charts • Blocking
Gothic Forest Scarf by Janelle Martin
Project Overview
The Gothic Forest Scarf is a luxurious knitted accessory designed by Janelle Martin that showcases the elegant qualities of premium cashmere fiber. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a sophisticated scarf featuring a stitch pattern inspired by forest imagery, with gothic architectural elements woven throughout the design. The scarf is engineered to use every yard of precious yarn, making it an efficient pattern for luxury fiber enthusiasts.
Stitch Pattern and Techniques
The body of this scarf features a distinctive stitch pattern that evokes a forest of trees, with branches forming high, mysterious arches characteristic of gothic architecture. The pattern is worked from a chart (Chart B), which guides knitters through the intricate stitch sequences. This charted pattern creates the visual forest effect while maintaining the intermediate difficulty level, making it accessible to knitters with solid fundamental skills but not requiring advanced techniques.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn Requirements: The Gothic Forest Scarf calls for 375 yards (343 meters) of 2-ply, 100% cashmere or cashmere blend yarn. The yarn weight is classified as heavy lace weight to light fingering weight, knitting to a gauge of 7 stitches per inch. This luxury fiber selection is fundamental to the design, as the pattern is specifically created to highlight the bloom and softness that premium cashmere develops when wet-blocked.
Needles: One US #4 (3.5 mm) circular needle measuring 24 to 32 inches (60 to 80 cm) in length, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge.
Finished Dimensions and Gauge
When stretched and blocked, the completed Gothic Forest Scarf measures 9.5 inches (24.13 cm) wide by 46 inches (116.84 cm) long. The working gauge is 27 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when measured over Chart B in the blocked state. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions and allowing the cashmere to display its characteristic bloom.
Skill Level and Design Considerations
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, requiring knitters to be comfortable reading charts and executing the stitch patterns shown in Chart B. The design philosophy emphasizes showcasing the luxurious properties of cashmere fiber, so yarn selection is crucial—choosing a yarn that will bloom when wet ensures the final scarf achieves the soft, refined aesthetic intended by the designer.
