Product Description
I’m lucky to live by the seaside and love a trip to the seaside, especially Brighton. I also love ice cream….vanilla, strawberry and pistachio….it is these flavours and colours that have inspired this shawl, and the open mesh stitch give good drape with this beautiful luxury alpaca and silk yarn.
Ice Cream Shawl by rosiejaq
What is Being Made
The Ice Cream Shawl is a lightweight, draping shawl inspired by the seaside town of Brighton and classic ice cream flavors. This knitted design measures approximately 158 cm (62 inches) long by 30 cm (12 inches) wide, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a decorative wrap. The shawl features a color palette reminiscent of vanilla, strawberry, and pistachio ice cream flavors, created through the use of three coordinating yarn colors worked together.
Techniques Used
The Ice Cream Shawl employs the open mesh stitch technique as its primary construction method. This stitch pattern creates an airy, openwork fabric that provides excellent drape and flow, making it ideal for a shawl that moves gracefully when worn. The open mesh construction allows the luxury yarn fibers to showcase their natural sheen and texture while maintaining structural integrity through strategic stitch placement.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including:
- Knit (k) stitches for solid fabric areas
- Purl (p) stitches for textural variation
- Yarn over (yo) and yarn forward (yfwd) stitches to create the openwork mesh effect
- Knit together (tog) decreases to shape the shawl
These basic stitches combine to form the open mesh stitch pattern that defines the shawl's distinctive aesthetic and draping qualities.
Materials
The Ice Cream Shawl is designed to be knitted with 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that creates delicate, refined fabric. The original pattern calls for Artesano Alpaca Silk 4ply yarn in three 50g skeins (200m/219yds each): Chartreuse, Rosada, and Blanc. Since this yarn is no longer available, the designer recommends UK Alpaca Baby Alpaca Silk 4ply as a suitable substitute that offers similar fiber content and performance characteristics.
Construction requires 3mm (US 2.5) straight needles and a darning needle for finishing and weaving in yarn ends. The gauge is established at 28 stitches by 36 rows over 10 centimeters, which is important for achieving the correct finished dimensions and drape of the shawl.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters who are new to shawl construction. The straightforward open mesh stitch and basic stitch abbreviations (CO, k, p, r, RS, st(s), tog, WS, yfwd, yo) provide a manageable introduction to creating a wearable garment with excellent results.
