The Joanna is a babies cardigan designed by Jennifer Lee, crafted in a three-colour colourwork pattern using 8ply yarn. This downloadable knitting pattern is suitable for newborns through 12-month-old babies, with four size options ranging from 0 to 12 months. The cardigan is photographed and showcased in the 3-month size, making it an ideal project for creating multiple garments across different baby stages.
Construction and Design Features
This cardigan features a classic round neckline with set-in sleeves, providing a traditional and flattering silhouette for babies. The garment includes 1x1 rib bands at the neckline, cuffs, and hem, which create neat, stretchy finishes that accommodate a growing baby. Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Joanna cardigan is rated as Easy difficulty, making it accessible for intermediate knitters. The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for babies' garments. The 1x1 rib technique is employed for all bands, providing elasticity and a professional finish.
The three-colour colourwork design adds visual interest while remaining straightforward to execute. Knitters will work with alternating colours in a structured pattern, creating a charming multi-coloured effect. The set-in sleeve construction requires basic shaping techniques, including decreases to create the armhole and sleeve cap.
Yarn and Materials
The Joanna cardigan is designed to be knitted with Creative Basics Esther 8ply yarn, a worsted-weight yarn supplied in 100g balls with a yardage of 220 metres per ball. The three-colour scheme requires:
- Main Colour (MC) in Mauve: 1 to 2 balls depending on size
- 1st Colour (C1) in Aqua: 1 ball for all sizes
- 2nd Colour (C2) in Hot Pink: 1 ball for all sizes
Knitting is worked on 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6), which are appropriate for 8ply yarn and the desired fabric tension. Additional materials include a wool needle for seaming the garment pieces together, a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, and buttons for the front closure.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is essential for ensuring the cardigan fits properly across the baby's chest and maintains the intended garment proportions.
Skill Level and Suitability
Rated as intermediate difficulty with an Easy pattern rating, the Joanna cardigan is suitable for knitters with some experience. The straightforward stocking stitch construction combined with basic shaping techniques makes this an excellent project for those looking to develop their skills in garment construction. The three-colour colourwork adds visual appeal without introducing complex techniques, making it an engaging and rewarding knitting project for creating special handmade gifts for babies.
