Lovin' Cables Cowl by Debra Dockendorf

What Is Being Made

Lovin' Cables is a downloadable knitting pattern for a cowl designed by Debra Dockendorf. This intermediate-level project features a circular cowl measuring 11 inches wide with a 55-inch circumference, making it a versatile neckwear piece suitable for various head sizes and styling preferences. The design showcases six distinct cable patterns, each inspired by different aspects of love, creating a rich visual narrative through the interplay of knit and purl stitches.

Techniques Used

The primary technique featured throughout this pattern is cable knitting, a classic method that creates raised, twisted textures through the strategic crossing of stitches. The designer employs a range of cable complexity levels, from simple cables to intricate braids and knots, allowing knitters to explore and develop their cable-working skills. The pattern progresses through six different cable designs, each presenting its own pathway of knits and purls that shift and flow to create the dimensional cable effects. This structured approach helps intermediate knitters build confidence and mastery with cable techniques.

Stitches Used

The foundation of this cowl relies on fundamental knitting stitches combined with cable techniques. Knit and purl stitches form the base structure, with their strategic placement creating the visual pathways that define each cable design. Cable stitches are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle, producing the signature twisted and braided textures. The interplay between knit and purl stitches generates contrast and depth, allowing the cables to stand out prominently against the background fabric.

Materials

  • Needles: US 7 circular needles with a 24-inch cable length, ideal for working in the round on a cowl project
  • Cable Needle: Required for manipulating stitches during cable crossings
  • Yarn: 2 skeins of MadelineTosh DK weight yarn (100% Merino wool, 100 grams per skein, 225 yards/205 meters per skein), providing approximately 450 yards of yardage for the complete project
  • Gauge: 20 stitches over 4 inches on US 7 needles after blocking, establishing the proper fabric density for the finished cowl dimensions

Pattern Inspiration

The Lovin' Cables design carries personal significance, rooted in the designer's introduction to knitting at age sixteen. Debra Dockendorf learned to knit from her mother during a vacation, working through a cable-patterned strip afghan. Despite being a beginner, she discovered an early passion for cables and has maintained that love throughout her knitting journey. This cowl pattern celebrates that enduring appreciation, inviting knitters to experience the meditative pleasure of watching cables form through the shifting pathways of knits and purls.
