Product Description

Worked in a hand spun yarn, you can easily substitute any DK weight yarn. Begun with an easy lace border, this shawl is finished with short-rows that are worked in a coordinating lace pattern. The lace is extended around the ends of the border, but can easily be omitted.

Delightfully feminine in the rose colorway, this is the perfect shawl to grab when you need something over your shoulders, and want to feel special.

Worked in one size, it could be made longer and deeper.

This is another one of my Patterns for Hope. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to Heifer International and Habitat for Humanity.

Margaret's Roses Lace Shawl by Therese Chynoweth

What Is Being Made

Margaret's Roses Lace Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl featuring a lace design. This triangular shawl measures 52 inches [132 cm] in length with a center depth of 12 inches [30.5 cm], making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Craft and Techniques

This design is created using the knitting craft with intermediate-level skill requirements. The shawl construction employs short-row shaping to create its triangular silhouette. Short-rows are a fundamental knitting technique that allows knitters to add depth and dimension to a garment by working back and forth over a subset of stitches rather than completing full rows. In Margaret's Roses Lace Shawl, the short-row technique is used strategically throughout the pattern to build the shawl's distinctive shape.

The pattern also incorporates lace work, which involves creating decorative openwork patterns through strategic yarn overs and decreases. Lace knitting requires attention to detail and an understanding of how yarn overs and decreases interact to form the intended design.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch base for this shawl is stockinette stitch (St st), which forms the foundation of the fabric. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a recognizable V-pattern on the right side. The lace elements are created through the combination of yarn overs and decreases, which are fundamental techniques in lace knitting that create the openwork characteristic of the design.

Materials

Yarn: Margaret's Roses Lace Shawl is designed for DK weight yarn (Light #3 category). The pattern calls for approximately 212 yards [194 m] of yarn, weighing approximately 4½ ounces [127.5 g]. The sample shown was created using handspun yarn from Cloudlover Hand Dyed Yarn & Fiber in the colorway Cerise, featuring 100% Rambouillet wool with 13 wraps per inch [2.5 cm].

Needles: Knitters will need US 7 [4.5 mm] circular needles measuring 24 inches [60 cm] long, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge.

Additional Notions: The pattern requires stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing.

Gauge and Sizing

The recommended gauge is 16½ stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches [10 cm] in stockinette stitch. While gauge is noted as not critical for this particular pattern, knitting looser or tighter than the specified stockinette gauge will result in finished measurements that differ from those listed. Knitters should swatch and measure their gauge before beginning if they wish to achieve the intended finished dimensions.
