Product Description

This design provides an easy introduction to stranded knitting.

The hat is knitted in the round using a lovely 100% merino wool yarn. The yarn knits up to produce a soft cosy hat which will keep you warm as the days grow shorter and temperatures drop.

The hat rim is knitted in double rib stitch. Due to the hat being knitted in the round, the easy colourwork and shaping sections are knitted in knit stitch but produce a stocking stitch result. Instructions for the stranded colourwork are provided in both written and chart form.

After blocking, the finished hat measures 27cm/10.5 inches from the crown to the edge before folding. The circumference of the hat at the base is 50cm/20 inches.

Merino Pom-Pom Hat by The Knitting Bit

What is Being Made

The Merino Pom-Pom Hat is a cozy, warm winter hat knitted from 100% merino wool. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat measuring 27cm (10.5 inches) from crown to edge before folding, with a base circumference of 50cm (20 inches). The hat features a classic design with a decorative pom-pom topper, making it both functional and visually appealing for cold weather wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

This hat employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure. The project begins with circular knitting, which allows for seamless construction in the round. Stranded colorwork is incorporated into the design, creating patterned sections using multiple yarn colors worked simultaneously. The hat includes shaping techniques to form the crown and achieve the proper fit. Blocking is performed after knitting to set the finished dimensions and improve the overall appearance of the garment.

Stitches Used

  • Double rib stitch – Used for the hat rim to create an elastic, fitted edge that helps the hat stay securely on the head
  • Knit stitch – Forms the primary fabric throughout the stranded colorwork and shaping sections

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The hat is knitted using Millamia Naturally Soft Aran weight yarn in 100% merino wool. The pattern requires 2 x 50g balls of Marine Blue and 1 x 50g ball of a contrasting color for the stranded colorwork sections. Aran weight yarn provides excellent warmth and drape while maintaining the softness characteristic of merino fiber.

Needles and Notions: Construction requires 5mm (US 8) circular needles in 16-inch (40cm) length for working the main body in the round, along with 5 x 5mm (US 8) double-pointed needles for decreasing at the crown. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and attaching the finished pom-pom, a large pom-pom maker for creating the topper, and a row marker for tracking rounds.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern is worked to a tension of 18 stitches and 24 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in knit rounds. The cast-on begins with 96 stitches worked in Marine Blue on circular needles, joined carefully to form a seamless circle. Understanding proper gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished measurements and ensuring the hat fits correctly.
