Mermaid Blankets Knitted in King Cole Chunky – Pattern 4865

This King Cole pattern 4865 is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern for a set of charming Mermaid Blankets, available in sizes ranging from Baby up to Lady. Designed with beginner knitters in mind, these whimsical blankets are shaped to resemble a mermaid's tail, making them a delightful and cosy gift or project for all ages. For every King Cole pattern purchased, a donation is made to the Pink Ribbon Foundation.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a mermaid tail blanket — a snug, wearable blanket styled to look like a mermaid's lower body and fin. The design includes a body section and a tail fin, which is knitted separately and shaped with increases and decreases to create the distinctive forked fin silhouette. The blanket is knitted in two identical pieces (back and front alike) and then joined. The tail fin is not included in the full length measurement of the blanket body, meaning it is an additional feature worked separately.

Multiple sizes are provided to suit a wide range of wearers, from small babies through to adult ladies, making this a versatile pattern suitable for gifting or personal use across all age groups.

Techniques Used

  • Shaping by increasing and decreasing: The tail fin sections are carefully shaped using increases at the beginning and end of alternate rows, then decreases at the beginning and end of alternate rows, creating the curved, tapered fin shape. Stitches are placed on a stitch holder to work each side of the fin separately before joining.
  • Working both sides of the tail fin separately: The pattern divides stitches for a first side and a second side of the tail fin, each worked independently with mirrored shaping, then joined across the wrong side by purling across both sets of stitches.
  • Alternate row shaping: Increases and decreases are worked on every following alternate row (foll alt row), a standard knitting technique for gradual, smooth shaping.
  • Make One (M1): A neat increase technique where a loop is picked up between the last and next stitch and worked into the back of the loop to avoid a hole, giving a tidy, almost invisible increase.
  • Tension swatching: The pattern emphasises the importance of achieving the correct tension before beginning, advising knitters to adjust needle size if their stitch count differs from the stated tension.

Stitches Used

  • 1×1 Rib: A classic ribbing stitch formed by alternating knit and purl stitches across the row. In this pattern it is worked as: Row 1 – *K1, P1, repeat from * to last stitch, K1; Row 2 – P1, *K1, P1, repeat from * to end. This creates a stretchy, neat edge or border section.
  • Garter Stitch (G-St): Every row is knitted, producing a ridged, reversible fabric with good elasticity and a cosy, textured appearance. Ideal for beginner knitters as it requires only the knit stitch.
  • Stocking Stitch (St-St): The classic knitting stitch formed by alternating a knit row and a purl row, creating a smooth fabric on the right side and a textured surface on the wrong side. Row 1 is knit; Row 2 is purl, then repeated throughout.

Materials

  • Yarn: King Cole Chunky weight yarn. The pattern uses a Main (M) colour and a Contrast (C) colour, allowing for creative colour combinations to personalise each blanket. Yarn amounts are approximate and based on average requirements.
  • Needles: 6mm knitting needles, or the size needed to achieve the correct tension of 14 stitches and 20 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over pattern. If fewer stitches are achieved per 10cm, a finer needle should be used; if more stitches are achieved, a larger needle is recommended.
  • Notions: A stitch holder is required
