Product Description
Nature’s Way is a baby blanket with a difference featuring brightly coloured, nature-inspired intarsia motifs interspersed with plain squares.
This blanket is designed to last beyond the newborn days: Nature’s Way can be used folded in half as a blanket for a Moses basket or crib; thrown on the floor to be used as a play mat or picnic blanket; used in a cot or cot bed; or can be snuggled up in for stories on the sofa. The fun motifs on the blanket are designed to appeal to both genders, and the blanket is sure to be loved by any baby, toddler or child.
All the squares included in the design are 10 inches in size and are knitted in stocking stitch with a moss stitch border. The whole blanket then has a moss stitch border.
The blanket is worked from clear, numbered charts, both coloured and symbols.
Note that the pattern has 37 pages, however, it is not necessary to print every page if you wish to work from paper.
Nature's Way Baby Blanket by Vikki Bird
What is Being Made
Nature's Way is a versatile baby blanket designed by independent designer Vikki Bird, created to celebrate the arrival of a newborn. This knitted blanket features nature-themed intarsia motifs in bright colors combined with plain squares, creating a visually engaging textile suitable for multiple uses throughout a child's early years. The blanket is designed to transition from newborn stage through toddlerhood and beyond, functioning as a Moses basket or crib blanket when folded in half, a play mat or picnic blanket when laid flat, or a cozy throw for storytime on the sofa.
Blanket Structure and Design
The blanket is constructed from individual 10-inch squares that are knitted separately and assembled together. Each square features a stocking stitch body with a moss stitch border, and the completed blanket receives an additional moss stitch border around the entire perimeter. The nature-inspired intarsia motifs are distributed throughout the blanket interspersed with plain squares, creating a balanced, gender-neutral design that appeals to babies and children of all genders.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia knitting: Colorwork technique used to create the nature-themed motifs with bright colors incorporated into the knitted fabric
- Stocking stitch: Primary stitch used for the main body of each square, creating a smooth, classic knitted surface
- Moss stitch: Textured stitch used for borders on individual squares and the blanket perimeter, adding visual interest and definition
- Square construction: Modular knitting approach where individual squares are knitted separately then assembled
Stitches Featured
The pattern employs two primary stitches: stocking stitch forms the foundation of each square, providing a smooth, refined surface ideal for displaying intarsia colorwork; and moss stitch creates textured borders that frame the squares and define the blanket's edges. This combination of smooth and textured stitches adds depth and visual dimension to the finished blanket.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Nature's Way is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and durability suitable for a baby blanket. The pattern includes clear, numbered charts available in both colored and symbol formats, allowing knitters to follow the intarsia motifs accurately whether they prefer visual color references or symbol-based charting. Knitters will need appropriate needles for DK weight yarn as specified in the pattern instructions.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, reflecting the complexity of intarsia colorwork combined with modular square construction and finishing techniques. Knitters should have solid foundational skills in stocking stitch and moss stitch, plus experience managing multiple yarn colors and reading detailed charts before undertaking this project.

Nature's Way is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, providing immediate access to the complete instructions, charts, and materials list for digital reference or printing.
