Nobomi Shawl by BiggerthanlifeKnits

What Is Being Made

The Nobomi Shawl is an asymmetric knit shawl designed by Noma Ndlovu. Named after the Xhosa word meaning "life," this shawl features a generous finished size of 54 inches (137 centimeters) in wingspan and 23 inches (58 centimeters) in depth, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering and styling. The asymmetric construction provides visual interest and modern design appeal.

Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project combines multiple techniques to create texture and visual dimension. The shawl is constructed using stockinette stripes as the primary stitch pattern, which are interrupted by slip stitches to create subtle texture variation. The edges of the shawl are finished with i-cord sides, a classic knitting technique that creates a neat, finished border and adds structural integrity to the piece.

The pattern is designed for quick knitting and portability, making it ideal for TV knitting and travel projects. The intermediate difficulty level makes it accessible to knitters with some experience while still offering engaging stitch work to maintain interest throughout the project.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch forming the base fabric in stripe sections
  • Slip stitches – used with yarn in front (Sl1wyif) to create textural breaks within the stockinette sections
  • I-cord – applied to the side edges for a finished, professional appearance

Materials and Gauge

The Nobomi Shawl is knit using 4-ply yarn in the form of Miss La Motte Twist Sock, which is 100% Merino wool. The pattern calls for 2 skeins of the main color (Smoke 1) and 1 skein of the contrast color (Nightmare), each skein weighing 100 grams with approximately 330 meters (360 yards) of yardage per skein. This high-quality Merino construction provides warmth, breathability, and the elasticity needed for a shawl's drape.

Knitting is worked on US 6 (4.0 millimeter) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 centimeters) long. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 34 rows in stockinette stitch over 4 inches (10 centimeters) after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for reaching the finished dimensions and ensuring the shawl has the intended drape and structure. Additional materials include a stitch marker and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
