Product Description
This was designed to use up 2 part skeins of NDS precious silk that I loved. Other test knitters have used dk and fingering weight yarns in a mix of fibres from wool to linen. This pattern is quite adaptable to yarn and tension- work at a gauge that will provide a good drape when blocked.
The inspiration came from sitting watching pebbles on a beach being washed over by the waves….. Can you see it?
My final shawl measured 110 cm x 50 cm after blocking- it grows dramatically, but add more ‘waves’ if you want to go bigger.

What is Being Made
The Pebbles on a Beach Shawl is an advanced knitting design created to transform leftover yarn into a finished garment. This shawl measures 110 cm x 50 cm after blocking, though the pattern is adaptable for larger sizes by adding additional 'waves' sections. The design draws inspiration from the natural movement of pebbles on a beach being washed over by waves, translating this visual concept into knitted texture and shaping.
Design Concept and Adaptability
This pattern was originally designed to use up 2 partial skeins of NDS precious silk yarn that the designer loved. The shawl's construction is quite adaptable to different yarn weights and tensions—knitters are encouraged to work at a gauge that will provide good drape when the finished piece is blocked. The modular nature of the pattern, with its repeating 'wave' sections, allows for customization of the final dimensions.
Techniques Used
The Pebbles on a Beach Shawl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its textured, wave-like appearance:
- Cable cast-on for the foundation of the shawl
- Bind-off techniques that create decorative edges and shaping, including specialized methods for casting off multiple stitches in sequence
- Blocking to achieve proper drape and final dimensions—essential for this design to display its full visual impact
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses specific abbreviations and stitch techniques to create its distinctive pebble and wave effects:
- BO5 (Bind Off 5): A method of binding off 5 stitches by knitting 2 stitches, then passing the first stitch knitted over the second. Another stitch is then knitted and the previous stitch is passed over this new stitch. This process continues to create 5 consecutive bind-offs.
- BO1 with yarn wrapping: A bind-off variation where the yarn is wrapped twice around the needle when binding off 1 stitch, creating additional texture and dimension in the edge work
- CO (Cast On): The pattern uses a cable cast-on method to establish the initial stitches
Materials and Specifications
The Pebbles on a Beach Shawl is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the delicate drape necessary for this shawl style. The designer used approximately 164 metres of each NDS 4-ply yarn color in the original sample, with 4mm needles. The use of NDS precious silk contributes to the luxurious drape and fluid movement of the finished shawl. Knitters should select 4mm needles appropriate for their chosen 4-ply yarn and adjust gauge as needed for optimal results.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the specialized bind-off techniques and the importance of proper tension and blocking to achieve the intended aesthetic. Knitters should be comfortable with cable cast-ons, multiple bind-off variations, and blocking techniques before beginning this project.
