Popcorn Pocket Scarf with Hood – PA-315
What is Being Made
This crochet pattern by designer Nancy Brown creates a versatile scarf with an integrated hood and decorative pockets. The scarf measures approximately 7 ½ inches wide and 64 inches in length, while the attached hood spans approximately 18 inches wide and 9 ½ inches in depth. This combination design offers both style and functionality, making it suitable for layering and cold-weather wear.
Craft and Techniques
This is an intermediate-level crochet project that combines fundamental and decorative crochet techniques. The pattern incorporates foundation chains, turning chains, and stitch placement variations to create structure and shaping. The design includes the construction of two separate pocket pieces that integrate into the main scarf body, requiring attention to alignment and joining. The hood is worked as an extension of the scarf, demonstrating how to increase dimensions and create three-dimensional shaping through strategic stitch placement and row construction.
Stitches Used
- Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch forming the base fabric and providing structure throughout the scarf and hood
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation rows, turning chains, and creating openwork spaces within the pattern
- Slip stitch (sc) – employed for joining yarn with a slip crochet technique, creating secure connections
- Popcorn stitch – a decorative textured stitch created by working 5 double crochets in the same stitch, then drawing the loop through to create a dimensional popcorn effect. This special stitch adds visual interest and tactile texture to the finished piece
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires Perfection DK yarn by Kraemer Yarns in the colorway Evening Song #2228. The yarn is a DK weight (light worsted), supplied in 3.5-ounce balls with 260 yards per ball. The project calls for 4 balls total, providing approximately 1,040 yards of yarn for completion. A Boye crochet hook in U.S. size G is used throughout the pattern. The recommended gauge is 7 stitches and 3 rows per 1 ½ inches when working in double crochet, which helps ensure proper sizing and fabric drape for the finished scarf and hood.
