Product Description

Everywhere I’ve lived, rain has played a major role in life, whether it was a drought in farm country, the nearly constant drizzle of the Pacific Northwest, or the magnificent thunderstorms of the midwest. Despite my location changes, I have always loved the lazy quality of a rainy day, and watching the raindrops make trails on the windows adds a simple joy to an afternoon spent with yarn and needles.

Raindrops on Windows is written in three sizes, measured at the cabled band. Stitches are picked up from the edge of the band and worked up to the crown to create a slouchy hat with a texture reminiscent of raindrop trails on windows. For those that don't enjoy purling, this pattern includes alternate instructions for working the hat inside out, eliminating most of the purling.

While this pattern is written in Sport weight yarn, the Raindrops on Windows hat can be worked at a variety of weights and gauges by making a few modifications.  There is a chart provided in the pattern.

Raindrops on Windows Knit Hat by Meridith Shepherd

What Is Being Made

Raindrops on Windows is an intermediate-level knit hat designed by Meridith Shepherd and published by Stacked Woolens. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished headwear piece available in three sizes to fit head circumferences of 19, 20, and 21 inches (48.5, 51, and 53.5 cm). The completed hat measures 18, 19, and 20 inches (46, 48.5, and 51 cm) in circumference at the cabled band, incorporating 1 inch (2.5 cm) of negative ease for a comfortable, secure fit. The design draws inspiration from the visual beauty of raindrops trailing down windows, translating this everyday observation into a knitted textile.

Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs classic knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The hat is constructed using a combination of circular knitting and double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless construction in the round. Cable work features prominently in the design, particularly at the cabled band that forms the base of the hat. Stitches are picked up from the band to continue the hat's body, a technique that creates clean transitions between pattern sections. The use of both circular needles and DPNs enables smooth transitions as the circumference decreases toward the crown.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates cable stitches as a defining design element, worked with a cable needle to create the textured, dimensional bands that reference the pattern's raindrop theme. While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the cable work requires familiarity with cable crosses and manipulation techniques. The pattern uses stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction sections, and a yarn needle assists with finishing and weaving in ends.

Materials and Yarn

Raindrops on Windows calls for one skein of The Plucky Knitter Traveler Sport yarn in the colorway Message in a Bottle. This sport-weight yarn is a premium blend containing 65% Merino wool, 20% silk, and 15% yak fiber. One skein provides 100 grams and 320 yards (293 meters) of yardage, sufficient for completing the hat in any of the three sizes. The Merino content ensures warmth and breathability, while the silk and yak fibers add softness, sheen, and subtle luxury to the finished fabric.

Tools and Notions

  • Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) 16-inch (40.5 cm) circular needle for the main body, plus matching double-pointed needles (DPNs) for crown shaping
  • Cable needle for executing cable crosses
  • Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and sections
  • Yarn needle for finishing, weaving in ends, and any necessary seaming
  • Crochet hook for provisional cast-on or other finishing techniques
  • Waste yarn for holding stitches or provisional methods

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, Raindrops on Windows assumes the knitter has foundational skills in circular knitting, basic cable work, and stitch manipulation. The pattern's complexity lies primarily in executing the cable band and managing stitches across circular needles and DPNs, making it accessible to knitters ready to expand beyond beginner techniques but not yet working with advanced colorwork or complex lace patterns.
