Product Description
I made the ribbing wide so that it could be pulled up over my face to keep it and my ears warm if it was windy. When not windy, just fold over the ribbing, and it makes for a beautiful collar to go with the granny stitch handkerchief-like pattern. For my cowl, I used Berroco Vintage Yarn, but Lion Brand Wool Ease is a great alternative. For a warmer cowl, use a yarn with more wool in it. The more synthetic fiber, like acrylic, the less it will protect against the wind. This cowl took me about three and a half hours to complete.
Ribbed Granny Stitch Cowl by Alexandra EyeLoveKnots
What is Being Made
The Ribbed Granny Stitch Cowl is a versatile crocheted neck accessory designed by Alexandra EyeLoveKnots. This cowl features a dual-purpose design with a wide ribbed section and a granny stitch body. The ribbed portion is intentionally wide enough to pull up over the face and ears for warmth during windy conditions, while the granny stitch section creates a handkerchief-like textured pattern. When not needed as a face covering, the ribbing can be folded down to create an attractive collar. This project is an excellent choice for gift-giving and requires only one skein of yarn to complete.
Techniques and Construction
The cowl employs two distinct crochet techniques to achieve its functional and aesthetic design. The ribbed section uses ribbing techniques to create vertical texture and stretch, while the granny stitch portion builds the main body with the classic granny stitch pattern. The ribbing is engineered with significant elasticity, stretching approximately four to five inches, making it adaptable to different head sizes and preferences. Crafters can customize the fit by adjusting the ribbing length—shortening it by one inch will create a tighter cowl if desired. The granny stitch pattern can also be modified in length and width to accommodate personal preferences.
Stitches Used
- Ribbed Stitch - Creates the wide, stretchy ribbed section that provides both warmth and a decorative collar element
- Granny Stitch - Forms the main body of the cowl with its characteristic handkerchief-like texture and open pattern
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern requires 218 yards of worsted weight yarn or aran weight yarn. The single-skein requirement makes this an economical project perfect for stash-busting or gift-making. The worsted weight yarn provides the structure needed for the ribbed sections while allowing the granny stitch to create an open, airy texture. A crochet hook appropriate for worsted weight yarn is required, though the specific hook size should be referenced in the complete pattern documentation.
Difficulty Level
This cowl is rated as a beginner level project, making it accessible to crocheters new to the craft while remaining satisfying for experienced makers. The combination of basic ribbed stitching and the fundamental granny stitch pattern requires only foundational crochet knowledge, though crafters should be comfortable with basic stitch techniques before beginning.
