Springa Socks by Lena Strandberg

What is Being Made

Springa Socks are a pair of summery short socks designed by independent designer Lena Strandberg. The name "Springa" means "to run" in Swedish, celebrating the wonderful functionality of feet. These cosy and cute socks are knitted from the top down and feature a traditional heel flap and gusset construction. The pattern is available in two women's sizes with adjustable sock length, offering a finished foot circumference of either 19 cm (approximately 7.5 inches) or 21 cm (approximately 8.25 inches) in unstretched fabric.

Knitting Techniques Used

Springa Socks employ several fundamental sock knitting techniques that make this an intermediate-level project. The top-down construction method begins at the cuff and works downward toward the toe, allowing knitters to try on the sock during the process and adjust the leg length to their preference. The pattern incorporates a heel flap, which is a reinforced section that provides durability and comfort in the heel area—a critical feature for functional socks. The gusset shaping technique is used to create a smooth transition from the leg to the foot, reducing bulk and improving the fit around the ankle and instep. These techniques combine to create a well-fitted, professional-looking sock suitable for everyday wear.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout Springa Socks is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for sock knitting. Stockinette stitch is formed by alternating knit and purl rows, producing the characteristic V-pattern texture on the right side of the fabric. The pattern also incorporates fundamental stitch techniques including knit (K), purl (P), knit two together (K2tog) for decreases, and yarn over (YO) for increases. These basic stitches work together to shape the sock's leg, heel, gusset, and foot sections, creating shaping and structure throughout the design.

Materials and Gauge

Springa Socks require approximately 80 grams of sock weight yarn in a 4-ply weight. The pattern samples were knitted using Wollmeise Twin and Baerenwolle Baerfoot sock yarns, both described as rather plump sock yarns that provide good stitch definition and durability. Circular needles in sizes 2.25 to 2.5 mm (US 1 to 1.5) are recommended, though knitters should select the needle size that achieves the correct gauge for their specific yarn. The pattern notes that needle conversion charts vary and emphasizes using the needle size that produces the proper gauge. Additionally, two stitch markers are required to track pattern repeats and construction points. The target gauge is 8 stitches and 11 rows per 2.5 cm (1 inch) measured in stockinette stitch. The pattern describes knitting the socks on circular needles but notes that they can also be knitted using double-pointed needles (DPNs) if preferred.
