Stars in Line Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Stars in Line Cardigan is a knitted baby cardigan designed by LinksnLoops.com (Barbara & Paula Clarkson). This pattern creates a charming button-front cardigan suitable for infants aged 0-3 months or 3-6 months, with actual chest measurements of 44 cm or 47 cm respectively. The cardigan features a decorative star motif worked into the design, making it an ideal handmade garment for newborns and young babies.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Sideways Construction: A key feature of this cardigan is that the main body is knitted sideways rather than in the traditional top-down or bottom-up method. This sideways knitting approach requires careful attention to row tension, as achieving the correct row gauge is vital to the success of the finished garment. Sideways construction allows for interesting stitch pattern placement and can create unique shaping opportunities.

Stitch Techniques: The pattern employs stocking stitch as the primary fabric base, which creates a smooth, classic knitted surface ideal for babies' garments. The star pattern is integrated into this foundation, likely using techniques such as intarsia, stranded colorwork, or jacquard methods to create the decorative star motif in contrasting yarn.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including increases, decreases, and alternating rows to shape the cardigan and create the star design. Standard abbreviations used throughout include stocking stitch for the main fabric, with increases and decreases employed for shaping the armholes, neckline, and button bands. The star pattern itself requires careful stitch placement and color changes to achieve the decorative effect.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn: This pattern calls for Sirdar Snuggly 4 ply yarn, a soft and gentle choice appropriate for baby garments. The main color (A) requires 2 x 50 g balls (approximately 226-247 meters/yards depending on size), while a contrasting yarn (B) of the same weight requires 1 x 50 g ball for the star detail work.

Needles and Notions: The pattern requires two pairs of knitting needles: 2¾ mm needles for ribbed edgings and 3¼ mm needles for the main fabric. Three small buttons are needed to complete the cardigan's front closure.

Tension and Gauge

The pattern specifies a tension of 28 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 3¼ mm needles. As emphasized in the pattern notes, achieving the correct row tension is particularly critical for this sideways-knitted design, as row gauge directly affects the length and fit of the finished cardigan.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The sideways construction method and colorwork star pattern require solid foundational skills and the ability to follow more complex pattern instructions.
