Product Description
This earwarmer is part of my Through the Window series, which features this mosaic crochet stitch pattern that resembles a window pane (to me). While my favorite way to work this technique is with a variegated color underneath, and a solid coordinating color on top, I thought I'd try a pretty popular color combination for Fall and Winter - light brown and black. There are so many possibilities, even completely solid! I finished my adult small earwarmer in just under an hour. You'll also need just a small amount of worsted weight yarn for this - I used about 80 yards of Red Heart Super Saver in Buff and Black. Good alternatives are Bernat Super Value, Caron One Pound, JoAnn's Big Twist and Hobby Lobby's Crafters Secret.
Twisted Through the Window Earwarmer - Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
The Twisted Through the Window Earwarmer is a crocheted headband accessory designed to keep ears warm during cooler seasons. This pattern is part of Alexandra EyeLoveKnots' "Through the Window" series, which features distinctive mosaic crochet stitch work that creates a visual effect resembling window panes. The earwarmer is suitable for adult sizing, with the pattern available in multiple color combinations to suit different style preferences and seasonal palettes.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern utilizes mosaic crochet as its primary technique. While mosaic crochet can appear complex, this design breaks down the intimidation factor by using straightforward foundational stitches. The stitch pattern is built from the following elements:
- Single crochets - forming the base structure of the mosaic pattern
- Chains - creating openings and spacing within the design
- Double crochets - used strategically to create overlapping effects and dimensional texture
The mosaic technique works by layering colors in a specific sequence, where a variegated or contrasting color is worked underneath and a coordinating solid color is worked on top. This creates the distinctive window pane appearance. The designer notes that even solid-color variations are possible, offering flexibility for customization.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for worsted weight or aran weight yarn. For the adult small size, approximately 80 yards total is required. The original sample was created using Red Heart Super Saver in Buff and Black - a popular fall and winter color pairing. A size I9/5.5mm crochet hook is used for this project. Crafters are encouraged to experiment with variegated and solid color combinations, or fully solid-color options for personalized results.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While mosaic crochet may initially seem challenging, the designer emphasizes that a confident beginner could successfully complete this project. The straightforward stitch combination of single crochets, chains, and double crochets makes the technique accessible once the basic mosaic concept is understood.
