Product Description
Going “up north". That’s a common phrase here in Michigan. People head out for the weekends and over the holidays, jamming up the highway in an effort to get up north. How nice to get away from the crowds and stress of everyday life. This is the first of my “Michiganisms" socks. It’s cold up north now so I designed these boot socks with an extra long cuff which can, of course, be folded over(you know I like that!). They are also sized for men and would be perfect for hunting or ice fishing! I stuck the Windowpane heel in these and reinforced the inside so they have more of a cushion in the cold. They are a super quick knit and perfect for those leftovers of yarn we all have, at least I do!
Where is “up north" to you, where do you go to get away?
Thanks for looking at my project.
Must knit now,

Up North Boot Socks by Phyll Lagerman
Project Overview
The Up North Boot Socks are a knitted sock design inspired by Michigan's popular "up north" getaway culture. Designed by Phyll Lagerman, these socks are available in both women's and men's sizing, making them versatile for various wearers and activities. The design reflects the designer's "Michiganisms" collection, celebrating regional traditions and the need for quality footwear in cold northern climates.
What Is Being Made
These are boot-height socks designed for warmth and durability in cold weather conditions. The socks feature an extra-long cuff that can be folded over for styling versatility. Men's sizing makes these socks particularly suitable for outdoor winter activities such as hunting and ice fishing. The boot sock construction provides enhanced coverage and protection compared to standard sock heights.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Up North Boot Socks are knit from cuff to toe, allowing for a straightforward construction process. The design incorporates a Windowpane heel, a decorative and functional heel technique that adds visual interest while maintaining structural integrity. The heel area features reinforced construction, providing extra cushioning and durability—an important feature for boots worn in demanding outdoor conditions and cold weather environments.
Stitches and Stitch Details
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern overview, the Windowpane heel technique is the signature stitch element. This heel construction creates a distinctive patterned appearance while the reinforced interior adds practical cushioning for comfort during extended wear in cold conditions.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Up North Boot Socks are knit using worsted weight yarn, which contributes to the quick knit timeline and creates appropriately dense fabric for boot socks. The pattern calls for Cascade 220 yarn in three coordinating colors: 8021 (light tan), 1208 (khaki), and 9489 (dark red). This three-color combination creates a cohesive, earthy palette suitable for outdoor wear. Men's sizing requires additional yardage with 2 hanks of main color yarn.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, these socks are suitable for knitters with some experience. The cuff-to-toe construction method and Windowpane heel technique require intermediate-level skills, though the worsted weight yarn and straightforward shaping make the project more accessible than fine-gauge sock patterns.
Format and Availability
The Up North Boot Socks pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient for immediate access and printing. This format allows knitters to reference the pattern while working and to share or store the design digitally.
