522 Molly Socks - Crochet Pattern for Women
Project Overview
The 522 Molly Socks designed by Sara Delaney are a women's crochet sock pattern that showcases the beautiful tonal colorway of Valley Yarns Franklin hand-dyed yarn. This intermediate-level project features an elegant inverted v-stitch pattern on the leg that highlights the subtle color variations in the yarn, making it an ideal choice for crafters who want to display variegated or tonal colorways in a functional wearable.
What Is Being Made
These are women's socks available in three size ranges: US women's sizes 3-6, 6-9, and 8-12. The socks are designed as a complete foot covering worked from the cuff down to the toe, featuring a structured heel and gusset for a well-fitted, durable garment.
Construction Techniques
The Molly Socks are constructed using several key crochet techniques that ensure a seamless, professional finish:
- Top-Down Construction: The socks are worked cuff-down, meaning you begin at the cuff opening and work downward toward the toe. This method allows for easy adjustments and try-ons during the crafting process.
- Worked in the Round: The entire sock is worked seamlessly in continuous rounds using a crochet hook, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, comfortable fit against the foot.
- Traditional Heel Flap and Gusset: The pattern incorporates a classic heel flap construction with a gusset, which provides structure, durability, and a custom fit around the heel and ankle area. This technique is commonly used in sock making to reinforce high-wear areas and ensure proper shaping.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs several specialized crochet stitches to create both texture and structure:
- Inverted V-Stitch: The signature stitch pattern featured on the leg of the sock. This decorative stitch creates a distinctive visual texture that showcases the hand-dyed color variations in the yarn beautifully.
- Single Crochet (sc): A fundamental crochet stitch used throughout the pattern for shaping and structural elements.
- Back Loop Single Crochet (blsc): A variation of single crochet worked through only the back loop of the stitch, creating a ridged texture often used for cuff ribbing or decorative banding.
- Double Crochet (dc): A taller stitch used for creating fabric with more drape and coverage in specific sections of the sock.
- Double Crochet Cluster (dcC): A special stitch technique where multiple yarn overs and loop manipulations create a clustered, textured effect. Each dcC stitch begins in the last stitch used by the previous cluster, creating a cohesive pattern.
- Extended Single Crochet (esc): A variation that adds height and creates a more open fabric by extending the single crochet stitch with an additional yarn over and loop pull-through.
- Chain (ch): The foundation stitch used to create the base of the pattern and for increasing.
Materials and Tools
The pattern is designed to be worked with specific materials to achieve the intended fit and appearance:
- Yarn: One skein of Valley Yarns Franklin in the colorway Grue. This yarn is composed of 75% wool and 25% nylon, providing durability and elasticity ideal for sock construction. Each skein contains 450 yards and weighs 4 ounces, classified as a 4-ply weight yarn that creates a medium-weight fabric suitable for comfortable, everyday socks.
- Crochet Hook: A US size B/1 (2.5mm) crochet hook or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. The smaller hook size is typical for sock construction, creating a tight, dense fabric that provides structure and durability in a wearable garment.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns, shaping techniques, and construction methods. The combination of special stitches, seamless construction, and heel flap shaping requires solid foundational skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions.
