Product Description
I designed this sweet little ballet top because I found it hard to find a raglan sleeved, crossover cardigan/shrug for a 2 year old.
I had seen something similar with a cable edge on it so decided to make up my own edge and add it.
It's warm for winter ballet classes and there are instructions for short sleeves too.
I have now added sizes up to 6 (2018)
Ballet Crossover Raglan Cardigan by Leanna's Designs
What Is Being Made
The Ballet Crossover Raglan Cardigan is a top-down knitted cardigan designed for children aged 12 months to 6 years. This garment features a distinctive crossover front design combined with classic raglan sleeve construction, creating an elegant and practical piece suitable for young children. The cardigan is available in four size options ranging from 12-24 months through size 5-6 years, with chest measurements from 51-53 cm (20-21 inches) up to 63 cm (25 inches).
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques that give the cardigan its refined appearance and structure. The garment is constructed using the top-down raglan method, which allows for seamless construction and easy customization of fit during the knitting process. The crossover front design showcases cable knitting, a decorative technique that creates twisted rope-like textures across the front of the cardigan. The raglan shaping is achieved through strategic increases that create the distinctive diagonal lines from the neckline to the underarms, a hallmark of raglan-style sweaters.
The pattern utilizes circular needle knitting for the body and sleeves, allowing the crafter to work in the round and avoid excessive seaming. This construction method is particularly practical for children's garments, as it minimizes finishing work and creates a more comfortable, seamless wearing experience.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Ballet Cardigan incorporates several specialized stitches and abbreviations that create its textured design:
- K1fb (Knit through front and back) – A foundational increase stitch that creates two stitches from one, used for shaping and texture
- M1L (Make 1 Left) – An invisible increase worked by picking up the yarn bar between stitches with the left needle from back to front, then knitting through the front loop, creating a left-leaning increase
- M1R (Make 1 Right) – A corresponding right-leaning increase worked by picking up the yarn bar from front to back and knitting through the back loop, used to balance shaping on either side of the cardigan
- C4B (Cable 4 Back) – A four-stitch cable worked by slipping two stitches onto a cable needle, holding it at the back of the work, knitting the next two stitches, then knitting the two stitches from the cable needle
- C4F (Cable 4 Front) – A corresponding cable worked with the cable needle held in front, creating a different directional twist than the back cable
- YF (Yarn Forward) – A yarn over technique that brings the yarn to the front of the work, typically used to create decorative eyelet holes or transitions between knit and purl sections
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ballet Crossover Raglan Cardigan is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, also known as 8-ply yarn or sport weight. The yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (12-24 months) requires 1-2 balls of 100g yarn, while the largest size (5-6 years) requires 2.75-3 balls. This yarn weight is ideal for children's garments, as it provides a balanced fabric that is neither too heavy nor too delicate, offering good drape and durability for active wear.
The pattern calls for 3.75mm and 4.5mm circular needles (US sizes 5 and 7), allowing the crafter to work with different needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and create textural variation. A 24-inch circular needle accommodates the body width comfortably. Additional tools required include four stitch markers to track pattern repeats and raglan increases, a cable needle for executing the cable stitches that define the crossover front design, and double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the sleeve caps and finishing.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 26 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in stockinette stitch with the larger needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the cardigan fits correctly across the chest and sleeve length. The detailed sizing chart provides measurements in both centimeters and inches, with sleeve length measured from underarm to wrist, ensuring a proper fit across all four size options.
