It's a great shawl to use up those half skeins that you might have laying around. We also had the idea that to celebrate fibre friends, you could split your 4 favorite fingering skeins with a special friend and knit Bestie Shawls!!

Besties For Life Knitted Shawl by Cozy Up Knits
Project Overview
Besties For Life is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Cozy Up Knits as a celebration of friendship within the fiber arts community. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a meaningful accessory that honors the connections formed among crafters who share a passion for knitting and yarn work.
What Is Being Made
This is a knitted shawl constructed using a garter stitch base with color work elements. The shawl features a structured increase pattern that creates an expanding triangular or crescent shape, making it a versatile garment suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap. The design incorporates multiple yarn colors to celebrate the "fibre friends" theme, with color changes marking distinct sections throughout the pattern.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Garter stitch — the primary stitch throughout, created by knitting every row on both right-side and wrong-side rows, producing a textured, reversible fabric
- Yarn-forward slip stitches — edge stitches slipped with yarn in front (sl1wyif) to create a neat, finished selvage
- Increases — knit-front-and-back (kfb) increases worked at strategic points to shape the shawl's expansion
- Decreases — slip-slip-knit (ssk) decreases incorporated into the pattern structure for shaping definition
- Color work — the pattern uses contrasting colors (CC) in separate sections, allowing crafters to showcase multiple yarn colors in a coordinated design
- Picot bind-off — a decorative edge finish that creates small loops along the final edge, adding a refined detail to the shawl's perimeter
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including k (knit), p (purl), st/sts (stitch/stitches), rs (right side), ws (wrong side), kfb (knit front and back for increases), and ssk (slip-slip-knit for decreases). The core stitch is garter repeat, worked over 3 stitches of increase per pattern section. The picot bind-off creates a decorative finished edge by slipping stitches back to the left needle and re-knitting them.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern calls for 4 colors, each consisting of 50 grams (210 yards) of fingering weight yarn, totaling approximately 840 yards across all colors. The yarn pictured in the original pattern is from Allison Barnes Yarn's 50-gram gradient set, though any fingering weight yarn in the desired colors may be substituted.
Needles: Size 4mm (US 6) needles are required, with an interchangeable circular needle cord measuring approximately 32 to 40 inches in length. The circular needle format allows for easy management of the expanding shawl as it grows.
Gauge: Garter stitch gauge is 23 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions and drape of the shawl.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes the knitter is comfortable with basic stitches and techniques but may be developing skills in shaping, color changes, and working with circular needles. The combination of increases, decreases, and color work transitions provides a satisfying challenge without requiring advanced techniques.
