The Brancaster Jumper is a classic women's pullover sweater designed by Debbie Bliss and worked in her own Falkland Aran yarn. This intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a relaxed, wearable jumper with a clean, textured finish that suits a wide range of casual and smart-casual occasions. The design is available in four sizes, fitting bust measurements from 81–86 cm (32–34 in) up to 112–117 cm (44–46 in), with finished bust measurements ranging from 99 cm (39 in) to 130 cm (51¼ in).
The Brancaster Jumper is constructed using a bottom-up, worked flat, seamed method. This means each piece — the back, front, and sleeves — is knitted separately as flat fabric, beginning at the lower edge and working upward toward the shoulders. Once all pieces are complete, they are joined using seams to assemble the finished garment. This traditional construction approach gives knitters precise control over shaping and produces a structured, durable result. It is particularly well-suited to aran-weight yarn, where seams add stability and help the jumper hold its shape over time.
Working flat on straight needles is a foundational knitting technique, making this pattern accessible to knitters who are comfortable with basic shaping but not yet working in the round. The intermediate difficulty rating reflects the combination of stitch pattern maintenance, garment shaping, and seaming required to complete the project successfully.
The body of the Brancaster Jumper features a repeating two-row textured stitch pattern that gives the fabric subtle visual interest without being overly complex. The pattern is set as follows:
These two rows are repeated throughout the main body sections, creating a broken rib or seed-rib effect that adds gentle texture and helps the fabric lie flat. This type of stitch pattern is a popular choice in aran-weight garments because it enhances the natural loft and depth of the yarn without requiring complex cable or lace techniques.
Additional stitches referenced in the pattern include stocking stitch (st st), standard knit (k) and purl (p), skpo (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over — a left-leaning decrease), and working through back loops (tbl). These are all standard techniques within the intermediate knitter's repertoire.
The pattern provides detailed finished measurements across all four sizes:
The body is worked until it measures approximately 32–35 cm (depending on size) before shaping begins, giving the jumper a comfortable, relaxed length with ease built into the finished bust measurement.
