Christmas Tea Cosy Tomte Tea Cosy by Alison Davis
What is Being Made
This is an original Christmas-themed tea cosy design by Alison Davis, specifically engineered to fit a 6-cup teapot. A tea cosy is a decorative knitted cover that insulates a teapot, keeping brewed tea warm while adding festive charm to the table. The Tomte Tea Cosy features a whimsical Scandinavian-inspired design, perfect for holiday entertaining and gift-giving.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Tomte Tea Cosy employs multiple knitting techniques to create its layered, textured appearance. The pattern uses stocking stitch as the primary fabric structure throughout the design. Shaping is accomplished through strategic increases and decreases, including KFB (knit into the front and back) for adding stitches and K2tog (knit two stitches together) and P2tog (purl two stitches together) for decreasing. The pattern also incorporates SKPO (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) decreases for refined shaping. Finishing is completed using the B&T (bind and tie) method, where yarn is threaded through remaining stitches, pulled tight, and tied off, leaving a tail for sewing seams together.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (SS) – the main fabric throughout
- Knit (K) and purl (P) stitches
- KFB increases for shaping
- K2tog and P2tog decreases
- SKPO decreases for refined edges
- Bind and tie cast-off method
Yarn and Needles
This pattern uses DK (double knit) weight yarn in multiple configurations to create varied textures. The main cosy body is worked using two strands of DK held together on 4.5mm needles, creating a denser fabric with tension of 15 stitches and 24 rows per 10cm square in stocking stitch. The beard detail is knitted on 4.5mm needles with a looser tension of 20 stitches and 30 rows per 10cm square. All other pieces use a single strand of DK on 3mm needles, producing a finer gauge of 25 stitches and 34 rows per 10cm square. This multi-gauge approach creates visual and textural interest in the finished cosy.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects involving multiple needle sizes, varied yarn weights, and shaping techniques. The combination of increases, decreases, and the need to manage different tensions across sections makes this an engaging project for developing knitters.
