Christmas Tree Crochet Decoration Pattern

What is Being Made

This is a Christmas tree crochet decoration designed by Katy Walley. The finished piece is a small festive ornament approximately 12cm tall and 10cm wide (excluding the hanging loop), making it an ideal size for tree decorations or holiday displays. The design features a complete miniature tree with a decorative pot base, suitable for intermediate-level crocheters.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

The pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the stitches used are fundamentally simple, the pattern includes several extra details and construction elements that require some crochet experience. This makes it suitable for crafters who have mastered basic crochet techniques but are ready for slightly more involved projects.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used

The pattern employs a variety of crochet techniques to create dimension and shaping:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and structural elements
  • Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch throughout the pattern
  • Front loop double crochet (FLdc) – creates textured detail by working through the front loop only
  • Back loop double crochet (BLdc) – adds dimension by working through the back loop only
  • Front loop double crochet 2 together (FLdc2tog) – decreases stitches while maintaining front loop texture
  • Back loop double crochet 2 together (BLdc2tog) – decreases stitches while maintaining back loop texture
  • Increases (inc) – created by working double crochet into the same stitch twice through both loops to expand sections
  • Magic circle (MC) – used as an alternative starting method for circular sections

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern is worked in aran weight yarn (also called worsted weight), specifically using Paintbox Yarns cotton aran in 100% cotton fiber. The pattern requires three separate yarn colors:

  • Yarn 1 (Main Tree) – Paintbox Yarns cotton aran, color 626 Spearmint Green, 13g total
  • Yarn 2 (Tree Trunk) – Paintbox Yarns cotton aran, color 611 Coffee Bean, 5.5g total
  • Yarn 3 (Plant Pot) – Paintbox Yarns cotton aran, available in multiple color options: color 643 Tea Rose, color 615 Pillar Red, or color 663 Su (color name appears incomplete in source material), 5g total

A 4.5mm crochet hook is used throughout the pattern to work with the aran weight yarn. The total yarn yardage is modest, making this an economical project that works well for using yarn scraps or small quantities from your stash.

Pattern Structure and Construction

The pattern uses UK crochet terminology throughout. The combination of front loop and back loop techniques creates visual texture and definition between the tree sections and the pot base. The use of increases and decreases allows the designer to shape the tree form into the characteristic triangular silhouette associated with Christmas trees, while the separate trunk and pot components add realistic detail to the finished decoration.
