Damenpullover in Schachenmayr Silk Wool – Free Knitting Pattern (Downloadable PDF)

This free downloadable PDF pattern from Schachenmayr provides full instructions for knitting a classic women's pullover sweater with a sophisticated ribbed texture and a neat stand-up collar (Stehkragen). The design is worked in separate pieces — back, front, and two sleeves — which are then seamed together for a clean, structured finish. The pattern is available in five sizes (32/34, 36/38, 40/42, 44/46, and 48/50), making it suitable for a wide range of figures.

What Is Being Made

The finished garment is a women's chunky-weight pullover featuring a textured all-over stitch pattern, shaped sleeves with sleeve cap shaping, and a stand-up collar approximately 8 cm in height. The sweater is worked to a total back length of 65 cm before the shoulder cast-off, giving it a comfortable, relaxed length. The collar stitches are picked up and worked straight upward after the shoulder bind-off, creating a seamless-looking neckline finish. The overall silhouette is classic and versatile, suitable for everyday wear.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Schachenmayr Select Silk Wool — a luxurious blend of 64% Schurwolle (pure new wool), 27% silk, and 9% polyamide, with a yardage of approximately 120 m per 50 g. The pattern calls for 400–600 g depending on size, in the colourway Anthrazit (shade 07193).
  • Needles: Milward knitting needles in size 5–6 mm, consistent with the chunky weight of the yarn.

Yarn Weight and Gauge

The yarn is classified as chunky weight, and the pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 25 rows = 10 cm × 10 cm measured in the main stitch pattern, slightly stretched widthwise. Achieving this gauge is important for correct sizing across all five size options.

Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting — all pieces (back, front, sleeves) are worked back and forth in rows.
  • Casting on and binding off — including a very loose bind-off for the collar edge to ensure comfortable stretch and drape.
  • Shoulder shaping via simultaneous bind-off on both sides at 65 cm height.
  • Sleeve shaping (Ärmelschrägung) — increases worked on both sides at regular row intervals: every 20th row for size 40/42, and every 10th row for sizes 44/46 and 48/50, adding up to 5 or 10 stitches per side respectively.
  • Sleeve cap shaping (Armkugel) — decreases worked symmetrically on both sides, beginning with a single stitch bind-off, then decreasing every 2nd row for 10–15 repetitions depending on size.
  • Decreasing technique: stitches are decreased by working 2 stitches together through the back loop (links zusammenstricken / k2tog), positioned a set number of stitches in from each edge for a neat, internal decrease line.
  • Collar construction — after shoulder bind-off, new edge stitches are cast on at each side and the remaining neck stitches are worked straight upward for 8 cm to form the stand-up collar.
  • Blocking and finishing — all pieces are pinned to shape and dried under damp cloths before seaming. Sleeves are set in after all seams are closed.

Stitches Used

  • Main stitch pattern (Grundmuster): A 2×3 rib variant — on right-side rows, stitches are worked in a repeating sequence of 2 purl stitches, 3 knit stitches; on wrong-side rows, all
