Diamond Reversible Cloths by Louisa Noble
What is Being Made
The Diamond Reversible Cloths are practical, multi-purpose knitted textiles designed by Louisa Noble. These diamond-shaped cloths can serve as dishcloths, potholders, washcloths, or decorative guest room textiles. Each finished cloth measures approximately 16 cm (6.5 inches) along each side, making them a compact yet functional addition to any kitchen or bathroom. The pattern includes an optional hanging loop for convenient storage.
Construction Method and Techniques
This knitting pattern employs a corner-to-corner construction method, which means the cloth is worked diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. This approach creates an interesting geometric build and allows for the diamond shape to emerge naturally as you knit. The most distinctive technical feature is the use of slip stitches throughout the pattern to create a double-layered, completely reversible cloth. This reversibility means both sides of the finished textile are equally attractive and functional, eliminating the need to hide a "wrong side."
The pattern incorporates lacy edging details that add visual interest while maintaining the cloth's practical absorbency. The combination of slip stitches with other knitting techniques creates texture and structural integrity without compromising the cloth's utility.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the foundational stitch forming the base structure
- Yarn over (YO) – creates the lacy, openwork sections of the edging
- Slip stitch (sl1 wyif) – slip one stitch with yarn in front, the key technique for creating the reversible, double-layered construction
- Increases (incr) – used in the pattern set-up to expand stitch count as the cloth grows
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Each Diamond Reversible Cloth requires 30g of 100% cotton yarn in DK weight (light worsted). Cotton is specified as the ideal fiber choice because it provides superior softness, absorbency, and durability compared to synthetic alternatives. The natural properties of cotton make these cloths particularly well-suited for kitchen and bathroom use where moisture absorption is essential.
Knitters will need a pair of UK size 7 / US size 7 / 4.5 mm needles for the main cloth construction. Additionally, a pair of double-pointed needles in the same size (4.5 mm) is optional but recommended if you choose to add the hanging loop detail at the end of the project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches involved are relatively straightforward, the combination of slip stitch techniques, yarn overs, and the corner-to-corner construction method requires some knitting experience and attention to pattern detail. Knitters comfortable with reading patterns and managing stitch increases and decreases will find this project manageable and rewarding.
