What Is Being Made
The Emilie June is an advanced-level knitted cardigan designed by independent designer Anna Sudo. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a sophisticated cardigan available in four size ranges: XS-S, M-L, XL-2X, and 3X-4X. The garment is sized based on shoulder width to ensure the best fit for the wearer.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is a knitting pattern that employs advanced construction techniques. The cardigan uses a provisional cast-on method, a technique favored by experienced knitters for creating seamless or reversible edges. The provisional cast-on is worked using waste yarn and a crochet hook, allowing stitches to be picked up later for a refined finish. This method requires familiarity with both knitting and crochet fundamentals, making it suitable for advanced-level crafters.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern begins with fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches worked in stockinette stitch formation. The construction uses stitch markers to track pattern sections and shaping points. The provisional cast-on creates 68 (77, 83, 90) stitches depending on size, with stitches picked up from the crochet chain bumps to establish the foundation row. Subsequent rows alternate between right-side knit rows and wrong-side purl rows, with strategic stitch marker placement to manage increases and shaping across the front panels.
Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions
The Emilie June cardigan is worked in Manos del Uruguay Wool Pattern Clasica, a 100% wool yarn in aran weight. The yardage requirement is 5 (7, 7, 8) skeins, with each skein containing 100 grams and 138 yards (126 meters). The sample shown is knitted in French Blue colorway.
Knitting needles required include:
- One US size 10.5 (6.5 mm) 29-inch circular needle for working the body in the round
- Four US size 10.5 (6.5 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns) for working smaller circumferences
Additional notions and tools needed to complete the project:
- 6.5 mm crochet hook for creating the provisional cast-on chain
- Waste yarn (minimum 10 yards) for the provisional cast-on
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
- Rustproof stitch markers (14, 17, 18, or 20 depending on size) for tracking pattern sections and shaping
- Rustproof pins for blocking and finishing
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the sophisticated construction techniques and attention to detail required. The provisional cast-on method and circular needle construction demand experience with multiple knitting techniques and comfort reading complex pattern instructions.
