Product Description
This knitting pattern is to make a pair of dolls and a doll’s house. The house roof and wall open up so you can add doll house furniture inside during playtime, and store your dolls at the end of the day. The doll house is made by knitting wall panels and covering plastic canvas grids that are cut to shape. These plastic grids are available from most good craft stores, and are usually used for embroidery projects. If you cannot find plastic grids you could use stiff cardboard instead. The exterior of the cottage is embroidered with Swiss Darning to add the windows and doors and a chart is included. Grandma and Grandpa both have spectacles made by bending jewellery wire into shape, but for safety, do not add spectacles if these dolls are for younger children as the ends of wire can be sharp. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Grandma and Grandpa's Cottage Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Amanda Berry provides instructions for creating a charming dollhouse set featuring Grandma and Grandpa dolls along with their cottage home. The project combines doll knitting with miniature architecture, making it an engaging intermediate-level craft suitable for knitters with some experience.
What Is Being Made
The pattern includes three main components: two articulated dolls representing Grandma and Grandpa, and a complete dollhouse cottage designed to accommodate them. The dolls are fully knitted figures, while the cottage features knitted walls reinforced with structural support and functional elements like closable doors.
Dolls Construction
The Grandma and Grandpa dolls are knitted as complete three-dimensional figures using DK weight yarn (also called double knitting or light worsted weight, 8 ply). Each doll is constructed by knitting individual body parts—head, body, arms, and legs—which are then seamed together using a darning or tapestry needle. The dolls are stuffed with toy filling to create a soft, plush texture. Grandma's doll includes a knitted shawl accessory secured with a 6mm blue button.
Dollhouse Construction
The cottage walls are knitted in DK weight yarn using 3mm (US 2.5) single pointed needles. To achieve structural integrity suitable for a functional dollhouse, the knitted walls are reinforced with three 28cm x 21cm plastic grid canvas sheets (or strong cardboard as an alternative). This layering technique allows the cottage to maintain its shape while remaining lightweight. The house features two snap fasteners for opening and closing doors or walls, and the roof or other architectural elements may incorporate additional functional components.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate project employs fundamental knitting techniques including:
- Flat knitting on single pointed needles to create individual pieces
- Seaming to join knitted components together using a tapestry needle
- Shaping through increases and decreases to form three-dimensional doll bodies
- Stuffing techniques to create dimensional, poseable figures
- Color work using multiple yarn shades to add detail and definition
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, the construction relies on standard knitting stitches appropriate for DK weight yarn, creating a fabric dense enough to hold stuffing securely.
Materials and Yarn
The entire project is worked in 100% acrylic DK yarn (double knitting weight, 8 ply). You will need up to a 100g skein in each of eight coordinating shades: Grey, Cream, Yellow, Brown, Green, Turquoise, Light Blue, and Dark Blue. The pattern recommends Deramores Studio Baby Soft DK in the specific colorways Pebble, Ice Cream, Sunshine, Sand, Kiwi, Mint, Waves, and Sapphire, though any quality DK acrylic yarn in these color families will work.
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires 2.75mm (US 2) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm for knitting the dolls, and 3mm (US 2.5) single pointed needles also with a minimum 20cm length for the cottage walls. Additional notions include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming all components, toy filling for stuffing the dolls, plastic grid canvas or cardboard for wall reinforcement, snap fasteners for functional doors, and a 6mm blue button for Grandma's shawl detail.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches, shaping techniques, and seaming. The combination of multiple small pieces, color coordination, and structural reinforcement makes it more complex than beginner projects but accessible to knitters with foundational skills.
