Product Description
This is a pattern for an intricate brioche and cabled cowl. The finished cowl measures 14 1/2 inches X 64 inches (but is easily adjustable, and instructions for dong this are explained in the pattern.) The cowl can be worn long or doubed as seen in some of the pictures. It can drape over your shoulders in a way that won’t fall off. Or it can be doubled for extra warmth in the winter or early spring. However, you may have a favorite way to wear cowls that’s different from mine. The combination of the brioche stitch with the traditional cable is not seen very often, and makes a striking combination.
Brioche knitting tends to be fluffier than regular knitting, so have both a visual and tactile that is not often found in knitting.
The brioche stitches are charted only, using brioche symbols.
Skill Level: Advanced - Advanced + (if you have not worked with brioche knitting before, this is NOT the pattern for you.)
Any heavy weight fingering yarn or sport weight yarn will work for this pattern.
Haifa Brioche Cabled Cowl by Linda Lehman
What is Being Made
The Haifa Brioche Cabled Cowl is an advanced knitting project that creates a stunning wearable accessory combining two sophisticated stitch techniques. This cowl measures approximately 14 ¼ inches by 64 inches when completed, making it a generous neck wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece. The finished cowl showcases the visual complexity and texture that results from merging brioche and cable stitching methods.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern employs brioche knitting as its primary technique, combined with regular cabling to create visual interest and dimensional texture. Brioche stitch is known for producing a reversible, elastic fabric with a distinctive lifted appearance on both sides. The pattern integrates an edge stitch designed by the creator to frame the piece professionally.
The pattern is charted only, meaning knitters follow visual charts rather than written row-by-row instructions. This format requires strong chart-reading skills and a thorough understanding of brioche knitting fundamentals. The designer has included guidance on grafting the brioche stitch, which is essential for seamlessly joining sections or binding off brioche fabric without disrupting the characteristic texture.
Core knitting techniques required include:
- Knit and purl stitches as foundational skills
- Yarn overs (yo's) for stitch creation
- Cable crossing and manipulation using a cable needle
- Advanced brioche stitch execution with excellent working knowledge
- Brioche grafting for finishing
Materials and Specifications
The Haifa Brioche Cabled Cowl requires 800 to 1200 yards of sport weight yarn (4-ply), providing flexibility depending on desired drape and personal gauge adjustments. Knitters will need U.S. Size #3 (3.0mm) needles for working the main fabric and a cable needle for executing cable crosses. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in ends and performing the brioche grafting technique.
The recommended gauge is 6 ½ stitches per inch in the Haifa Brioche stitch. Achieving proper gauge is critical, as variations will affect the finished cowl dimensions and total yardage requirements. The designer advises adjusting needle size if necessary to match the specified gauge rather than proceeding with incorrect tension.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated Advanced to Advanced Plus, suitable only for experienced knitters with excellent command of fundamental techniques and substantial brioche knitting experience. The combination of charted instructions, brioche stitch complexity, and cable integration makes this project unsuitable for beginners or intermediate knitters. Success requires confident execution of yarn overs, cable manipulations, and the specialized brioche stitch techniques.
