Product Description

The pattern comes in four sizes: S, M, L, XL Finished sizes: 6½ (8, 9½, 11)” / 16.5 (20.5, 24, 28)cm foot circumference and 6½ (8, 10, 12)” / 16.5 (20.5, 25.5, 30.5)cm foot length from back of heel to tip of toe.

A few video tutorials are provided that the novice knitter may find helpful… 1. Old Norwegian CO. 2. Working the heel flap, heel turn, and gusset. 3. Kitchener stitch.

I work my slippers socks using 2 circular needles but a handful of my students prefer using DPNs. So, either way will work.

Harvest Slipper Socks by Joan Laws

Project Overview

Harvest Slipper Socks are a knitted slipper project designed by Joan Laws, available in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. These cozy slippers feature a finished foot circumference ranging from 6½ inches (16.5cm) for size Small to 11 inches (28cm) for size Extra Large, with corresponding foot lengths from 6½ inches (16.5cm) to 12 inches (30.5cm) measured from the back of the heel to the tip of the toe. The design showcases a charming harvest-themed color palette that makes these slippers both functional and visually appealing.

Craft and Techniques

This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs several essential sock-knitting techniques. The pattern utilizes circular needle construction, which allows for seamless knitting in the round—a hallmark of professional sock design. Knitters will progress through multiple construction methods: the leg section is worked using circular needles, and the pattern transitions to double-pointed needles (DPNs) when shaping the gusset, a critical technique for creating a properly fitted heel. This combination of needle types ensures both comfort and structural integrity throughout the slipper.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The primary stitch used in these slippers is Stockinette Stitch (St st), worked in the round to create a smooth, classic fabric. The pattern requires achieving a specific gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches (10cm) when working Stockinette Stitch in the round on the larger needles. This gauge specification is essential for ensuring the finished slippers match the intended dimensions and fit properly.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Harvest Slipper Socks pattern calls for Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash, a 100% Superwash Wool yarn that offers both durability and easy care. Each skein provides 220 yards (200 meters) and weighs 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The pattern requires one skein in each of four colors per pair of slippers, allowing for creative color combinations. The two sock variations showcase different color arrangements: Sock #1 uses Color A Butterscotch (#853), Color B Daffodil (#821), Color C Pumpkin (#822), and Color D Lime (#851), while Sock #2 swaps the positions of the Pumpkin and Lime colors for visual variety.

Needles and Equipment

Construction requires two size US6 (4.0mm) 16-inch (40cm) circular needles and two size US7 (4.5mm) 16-inch (40cm) circular needles, along with matching size US7 double-pointed needles for the gusset shaping phase. The circular needles accommodate the leg and initial foot sections, while the transition to DPNs provides the control needed for the gusset decreases. Additional supplies include one stitch holder (or scrap yarn as an alternative) for holding stitches during construction. Optional finishing materials include puffy paint or an alternative non-skid sole treatment to prevent slipping, and reinforcement thread for added durability in high-wear areas.

Yarn Weight and Construction Details

The worsted weight yarn used in this pattern creates a substantial, warm slipper suitable for everyday wear. The Superwash treatment ensures these slippers can be machine washed, making them practical for frequent use and cleaning. The combination of worsted weight yarn with the specified gauge produces a fabric with excellent structure and longevity, ideal for a garment that will receive regular wear.
