Product Description

I wanted to design a cozy cowl that was attractive on both sides and had a bit of shaping for a better fit at the neckline. This lovely reversible stitch pattern features hidden leaves that make a secret promise of spring to the winter-weary wearer. You can wear it with either side facing out, depending on your mood.

The cowl is knit in the round and begins with a provisional cast-on. The simple lacy pattern uses a logical progression that is easy to understand and creates gently rippling edges. The shaping is achieved by changing the needle size twice. Both edges feature an I-cord bind-off for a clean finish.

Techniques Used:

• Decreases: k2tog, ssk

• Duplicate stitch (to finish off the bind off seamlessly)

• I-cord Bind-off (includes knitted cast-on)

• Increase: yo

• Knit, purl

• Knitting in the round

• Provisional Cast-on over spare circular needle or waste yarn

This pattern includes charts, written instructions, and links to references for all techniques, including the Provisional Cast-on and the I-Cord Bind-off.

This pattern has been tech edited and test knit. It includes yarn management tips for working with a single ply yarn.

Hidden Leaves Cowl by Carla Cuadros

What Is Being Made

The Hidden Leaves Cowl is a reversible knit cowl designed for a cozy, fitted neckline. This intermediate-level knitting project features an attractive stitch pattern that looks beautiful on both sides, allowing the wearer to choose which side faces outward depending on their preference or mood. The cowl is specifically designed with shaping at the neckline for improved fit and comfort.

Design Features

This cowl showcases a lovely reversible stitch pattern centered around hidden leaf motifs created through the bind-off technique. The design incorporates what the pattern describes as a "secret promise of spring" through these hidden leaves, making it an ideal accessory for winter wear with subtle seasonal charm. The simple lacy pattern uses a logical progression that is easy to understand and creates gently rippling edges along both sides of the cowl.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Provisional Cast-On: The cowl begins with a provisional cast-on worked purlwise, allowing for seamless construction
  • Knitting in the Round: The entire cowl is knit circularly for seamless construction
  • Decreases: The pattern uses k2tog (knit 2 together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) decreases to shape the cowl
  • Shaping: Needle size changes are used twice throughout the pattern to achieve the desired fit at the neckline
  • I-Cord Bind-Off: Both edges are finished with an I-cord bind-off for a clean, professional edge
  • Duplicate Stitch: This embellishment technique is incorporated into the design
  • Yarn Overs: Lacy elements are created using yarn overs to form the reversible stitch pattern

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch
  • Purl stitch
  • Yarn over (yo)
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog)
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk)

Materials

This downloadable PDF pattern requires knitting needles (with specific sizes indicated in the pattern for the shaping transitions) and yarn appropriate for a cowl project. The pattern includes a knitted cast-on as part of the I-cord bind-off technique, so familiarity with this method is helpful for completing the project.

Pattern Structure

The pattern is organized with clear abbreviations and instructions. It includes a repeating stitch pattern with logical progression that makes it accessible for intermediate knitters. The pattern distinguishes between right side (RS) and wrong side (WS) rows, and uses standard knitting notation including place marker (pm) and slip marker (sm) instructions for tracking pattern repeats.

This pattern was tech edited by Heather Zoppetti and designed by Carla Cuadros.
