Hooded Scarf in Schachenmayr Bravo – Knitting Pattern 8931

This free downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Schachenmayr guides knitters through creating a beautifully textured hooded scarf — a practical and stylish accessory that combines the warmth of a traditional scarf with the added coverage of an attached hood. The finished piece measures approximately 160 cm in total length, with a hood width of approximately 22.5 cm, making it a generous, wrap-around accessory suitable for cold-weather wear.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a single knitted piece that functions as both a scarf and a hood. The hood section is integrated seamlessly into the body of the scarf by increasing stitches at a specific point along the length, shaping the hood, and then decreasing back down to the original scarf width. The result is a continuous, one-piece construction that requires no seaming of separate components. The design is worked flat, back and forth in rows, giving the finished fabric a structured, neat appearance on both sides.

Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting worked back and forth in rows throughout the entire piece
  • Casting on additional stitches at the end of right-side rows to shape the hood — specifically, 4 times 3 stitches and 5 times 2 stitches are added incrementally, expanding from 30 stitches to 52 stitches
  • Binding off stitches symmetrically at the beginning of wrong-side rows to reduce the hood back down — 5 times 2 stitches and 4 times 3 stitches are cast off in sequence
  • Short-row (German short-row) technique used when knitting a small integrated pocket: stitches are left unworked, the work is turned, and a double stitch is created at the turning point by bringing the yarn to the front, inserting the needle from the right into the stitch, and slipping both the stitch and yarn together — a classic method for creating smooth, gap-free short-row shaping
  • Twisted stitch increase (picking up and knitting through the cross thread between stitches) used at the start of the scarf section
  • Selvedge (edge) stitches maintained consistently throughout for a clean, even border

Stitches Used

  • Cable pattern (Zopfmuster) — an 18-stitch cable panel worked from a chart, repeated over an 8-row sequence; right-side rows follow the chart while wrong-side rows are worked as the stitches appear. This classic cable motif creates a raised, rope-like texture that runs centrally along the length of the scarf and continues up through the hood section.
  • Reverse stockinette stitch (glatt links) — knit on wrong-side rows, purled on right-side rows; used as a background panel on either side of the cable, giving the cable definition and relief
  • Stockinette stitch (glatt rechts) — knit on right-side rows, purled on wrong-side rows; used in the pocket section
  • Rib stitch / ribbing (Bündchenmuster) — a 2-knit, 2-purl rib pattern worked on smaller needles at the transition point where the hood narrows back into the second scarf section; the ribbing begins after a right-side row and ends with 2 knit stitches before the selvedge, creating a neat, elastic finish
  • Selvedge stitches (Randmaschen) — worked at both edges throughout to ensure tidy, stable borders suitable for a finished accessory

Pocket Detail

The pattern also includes instructions for a small knitted pocket, adding a functional element to the design. The pocket begins with 20 stitches cast on using the larger needles and is worked in stockinette stitch for 6 cm. Short rows are then introduced to create three-dimensional shaping within the pocket fabric. This is an optional but charming detail that enhances the practicality of the hooded scarf.
