Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia David Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater featuring an intarsia chart design named David Moniker. The garment is sized to fit multiple age ranges and is constructed using a classic pullover sweater structure with a shaped back, front, and sleeves. The intarsia technique allows for detailed colorwork to be incorporated into the knitted fabric, creating a pictorial or patterned design element on the finished sweater.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project using the intarsia method for colorwork. Intarsia is an advanced colorwork technique where different colored yarns are used to create a large-scale design or picture within the knitted fabric. Unlike stranding or Fair Isle, which carry unused colors across the back of the work, intarsia uses separate lengths or bobbins of yarn for each color section, resulting in a single-thickness fabric with no floats on the reverse side. This technique is ideal for children's garments as it creates a smooth, comfortable interior without the bulk of carried yarns.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a recognizable V-pattern on the right side
- 2x2 Ribbing (2x2 rib): Used for the cuff and waistband sections, alternating knit and purl stitches in a two-by-two pattern to create an elastic, fitted edge that hugs the wrists and waist
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the armholes and create shaping throughout the garment
- Knit Stitch (k): Foundation stitch used throughout
- Purl Stitch (p): Used in ribbing and shaping sequences
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that produces a fine, detailed fabric suitable for children's clothing. The pattern specifies 2¾mm needles for the main body work in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed edgings. The use of smaller needles for ribbing creates a tighter, more elastic edge compared to the body fabric. Yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used, so matching gauge is essential for proper fit across the multiple size options provided.
Construction and Shaping
The sweater is constructed in pieces, beginning with the back panel. The back is cast on with 70 stitches and worked in ribbing before transitioning to stockinette stitch for the main body. The front is worked similarly, with the intarsia chart integrated during the stockinette stitch section. Armhole shaping is achieved through decreases at each end of rows, reducing the stitch count progressively. The pattern includes multiple size options with varying stitch counts and row lengths, allowing the design to be knitted for different children's sizes. Sleeves are worked separately and incorporate the thumb method for casting on, indicating a fitted sleeve cap construction.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches are fundamental, the intarsia colorwork technique requires careful attention to color changes, bobbins, and chart reading. Knitters should be comfortable with gauge, shaping, and following multi-row instructions before attempting this project.
